Competency 2 Assessment

The scientific method is the set of assumptions, rules, and procedures scientists use to

conduct research. This method can isolate the causes and effects of behavior, leading to a better

understanding of behavior. A scientific method begins with a hypothesis that is tested to see if it

is accurate. Using the scientific method in research designs can help ensure that extraneous

variables are controlled to isolate causes and effects. With this, one can be sure that only the

independent variable (manipulated by the researcher) is the one that caused the effect (dependent

variable).

Psychologists may use the scientific method for accumulating, generating, and reporting

basic research. Using the scientific method allows psychologists to find solutions to everyday

problems. Organizing principles, including laws, theories, and research hypotheses, give

structure and uniformity to scientific methods. It will also allow individuals to enlighten each

other and work together to advance the field of psychological science. Psychological studies'

goals are to describe, explain, predict, and perhaps influence mental processes or behaviors. To

do this, psychologists utilize the scientific method to conduct psychological research. The

scientific method is a set of principles and procedures used by researchers to develop questions,

collect data, and reach conclusions. While conducting research, one should consider the scientific

method as a guide to give conclusive and reliable research.

Considering research that was carried out on “situational analysis of shared leadership in

a self-managing team” by a student at the University of the Philippines, we see how he employed

the scientific methods to carry out his research successfully.

First of all, he posed a research question of what impact does a situational analysis of

shared leadership in a self-managing team has on the organization. He clearly explained his aim
3

of coming up with the research question by giving various illustrations and support and why the

various organization needed to adopt such an approach.

He goes ahead and now tests the research question to ascertain the validity in it. He

conducted his study in a team of employees within the Roadwork’s Division within the Hamilton

City council. Here there were 12 workers, each responsible for maintenance of the roads within

some section. He carried out his research by adequately put in place scientific research measures,

which helped him collect information for this group of workers, which helped him answer his

research question.

He finally analyzed the findings that he got from the field, where he examined workers in the

Roadwork Division within Hamilton City and wrote a conclusive report supporting his research

question. From this, we can see how important it is to use the scientific methods when

researching since it gives us a systematic guide on how to do our research conclusively and

adequately (Shaughnessy & Zechmeister,1985).

Research topic:  How the behavior of a child is affected by the surrounding environment?

The purpose of this research is to learn various effects and various ways in which a

behavior of a child is affected by the surrounding environment in which he or she lives and

spends most of his time in. behavior is acquired through learning, and one of how learning

occurs is through observation. When a child observes the surrounding environment, he/she can

learn various behaviors according to the environment he is in. this research will enable us to

learn the basic principles of behavior as this research will lay a good foundation in which we can

see and understand them. We know that the basic principles of behavior entail the following; that

behavior results from its immediate environment, its consequences influence the behavior, the
4

behavior is influenced by positive consequences than the negative ones, and behavior is

reinforced.

In the research, one would like to ascertain the validity of this statement by clearly

employing the scientific methods, which will guide how I will carry out my research

systematically to achieve all my desired goals. I will, first of all, formulate my research question;

I formulated a hypothesis as this will help me know how and what I will be expected to do while

in the field; I then predict an outcome for my research for must be having the desired intention

that I would like to achieve and finally after carrying out my research I would be able to compile

and analyze my findings from my research. From these findings, I would have gotten the real

implication of the environment to a child's behavior, and this will help me and help others to be

able to mold the behaviors by varying the environment appropriately.
