Intro:

“We will be discussing the ASME SA Teaching Resource:  Indigenous Australian Music in
Schools”

Body:

 As the Australian Curriculum was implemented across schools, an underlying issue

for teachers was finding the appropriate resources to authentically teach Aboriginal
music to their students.  This can result to teachers lacking confidence in their
abilities as well as students being ignorant of Aboriginal culture and history, in
addition to the ongoing issues surrounding racism and discrimination.
 This teaching resource was made in collaboration between organisations,
institutions, educators and individuals to gather resources and establish guidelines
and standards for learning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music in educational
settings.
 This document contains a vast amount of valid and credible Indigenous resources
that could serve beneficial for teachers and students.
 Teachers can easily acquire these resources through this documents
 The resources enable students to authentically study and engage in Aboriginal
history, culture and geography
 The resources also explore ongoing issues of institutionalised racism and
marginalisation and how Indigenous musicians respond to them.  This can help both
teachers and students acknowledge the ongoing issues and how to address them,
which can positively affect the wellbeing of Aboriginal students and their education
(Garvis, 2006)
 Additionally, authentic engagement with these resources would enable us to develop
valuable Aboriginal perspectives
 Despite this publication being created within a South Australian setting, it can be
incorporated within a New South Wales education setting
 The repertoire of songs and activities involved manages to fulfill the learning
outcomes set within the Music syllabus (NESA, 2003)
 The resources contained are not just secondary sources, but they also contain first-
hand experiences that contribute to the learning of Aboriginal cultures, history,
geography and relationships.  This can promote engagement and empathy within
Aboriginal cultures and history (Mackinlay, 2011)
 Popular Indigenous music recordings and transcriptions are included as resources
 The article promotes the 8 ways learning framework

Conclusion:
This resource would prove beneficial for educators and students as it allows the school to
immerse themselves in Aboringal culture and fulfill syllabus learning outcomes.
