    Basic knowledge

    These determiners refer to quantity give only a rough idea of quantities or numbers.

    We use some in positive statements:

    Give me some milk, please.

    I have some flowers in my garden.

    We use any in questions and negative statements:

    Have you got any sugar?

    The Millers haven't any children.

    We can use no instead of not any, with a more negative meaning:

    I had no money.

    Some can be used in questions (mainly offers and requests) when we think the answer
    will be yes:

    Will you have some tea?

    Aren't there some plates in that cupboard?

    We use some and any with countable or uncountable nouns in the plural. We can also use
    them with countable nouns in the singular. In this case, some indicates that the person,
    place, object, etc is unknown and any means 'no matter which':

    He's looking for some book he's lost.

    I'll take any book.

    Expertise

    We cannot use no without a noun. When no is not immediately followed by a noun, we


    replace no by none which we can use as a one-word answer:

    None of them has arrived yet.

    How many tickets have you got?


    None.
