Tube cleaning systems with brushes

Layers of fouling in the tubes of hea t exchange rs have a negative effect on the t hermal performance of the
heat exchang er. In order to reduce the fouling resistance inside the tubes, various mechanical cl eaning
methods are used. In practice, automatic brush cle aning has prove n to b e a good and economical
method to cle an he at exchang er tubes flowed through by liquids. The brushes are pushed thro ugh the
tubes by the flow. The direction of flow is normally re versed for about 1 mi n. every 8 hrs by automatically
controll ed valves. Protecting screens on both sides of the tube hold the bru shes back.

Turbulence promotors

In the laminar flow of highly viscous liquids through heat exch angers, the overall heat transfer coeffi cient
is often controlled by the inner heat transfer coefficie nt. The main resistance is to be f ound in the Prandtl's
boundary layer. The use of turbulence promotors generates a radia l mixing of the bounda ry layer and
thus a d istinctly better inner heat tra nsfer. Further, the hea t exchanger shows a lower tendency to foul ing
due to the resultant secondary flow. Altho ugh the tub e side pressure drop rises strongly, a compa ct, favour-
ably pri ced heat exchanger is obtained by the use of the turbulence p romotors.
