SOCIAL MEDIA
101
BY JADA MARIE BOLES

L A S T E D I T,
OCTOBER 2020
PREFACE
You’ve purchased this eBook because you want to do one of the
following:
A. Start your social media platforms
B. Grow your social media platforms
C. Make money off your social media platforms

Well, you’re in the right spot! Starting a new venture is the

hardest. So, congratulations on taking the first step by
purchasing this guide!

I encourage you to print this out or transfer to a tablet and take

notes. By the end of this, you should leave with new knowledge
about social media that you can utilize with your personal brand
or business!

P.S. All the terms that I’ve italicized and marked in grey, are
important words to know. For your convenience, I’ve put them
all together in a glossary at the end. This is for you to look back
on whenever you need some guidance with understanding
different terms that are used in the industry! :)

LET’S GET STARTED

1
OVERVIEW
Let’s first start with understanding exactly what social media is.

Social Media can be defined as, “Any digital tool that allows users to
quickly create and share content with the public1.”

The various types of social media include:

Believe it or not, there is a way to profit financially off of all platforms

I’ve listed above. Down below, are a couple people that make an
income from social media posting and you can do this too!

Although followers are not everything, it would be helpful to start this

journey with at least 1,000 followers. This will help shape your
platform and build an audience! This is only a recommendation from
my point of view; so take in at your own discretion.

2
1.
DECIDING WHAT TO POST

You need to first figure out what your niche is. Your niche is going to
be the specialized focus for your platforms. This could be limited to
one or a mixture of two to three:
‣ Beauty ‣ Luxury/Lifestyle
‣ Health & Fitness ‣ Gaming
‣ Lifestyle ‣ Animals
‣ Travel ‣ Family/Parenting
‣ Fashion ‣ Technology
‣ Business/Making money
online

If you can’t figure out what you want your niche to be, look at your
most recent likes or reference your favorite accounts that you follow
online. There’s nothing wrong with gathering inspiration!

Now, is understanding that you should be posting a mix of photos and

videos (depending on what your niche is) and stories. Consistency is
key for growth and success.

Next, is instilling a feed. Your feed is the, “aesthetic,” or planning of

the content you choose to post. This is one of the first things a visitor
sees when landing on your page; so it’s important! This is thinking
more about how each post can be cohesive with one another and
aligns with you and your brand.

Typically when one chooses to make their feed cohesive, they decide
on one specific filter to use combined with planning out what photos
will be posted when and in what order. (FYI, I give you all the apps to
help out with planning and editing later!)

3
2.
YOUR TARGET MARKET… AKA YOUR
FOLLOWERS

Figuring out what to post is going to lead into your target market.
Understanding your target market is being able to understand the
type of people who follow you. Think of the target market as the
articular group of people that your platform will be aimed at.

Structuring your target market includes looking at the age, location,

gender, and perhaps the economic background of your followers.

If you need help, determine this… ask yourself this question. “What type
of person would look at my content?” By asking yourself this, it should
give you an idea about the type of people your target market would
consist of.

Also… DO NOT BUY YOUR FOLLOWERS!! Don’t feel inclined or pushed

to grow your following artificially. It’s better to grow naturally through
consistency and hard, quality work. People can see when someone has
bought followers depending on the follower:ratio. Be careful. Take it
one day at a time. Remember that good things take time and anything
rushed won’t last long!

4
3.
PROFESSIONALISM ON SOCIAL MEDIA

That’s the thing about social media. Millions of people have accounts,
but only a handful know how to cater to it as a career and as a
professional account.

One of the first essentials to navigating a professional and profitable

social media platform is making sure that the creator or business
account settings are turned ON! This enables you to closely view and
keep track of your analytics of posts and followers. It also helps
highlight what your niche is as far as your brand.

Secondly, is the username. Usernames should be easy to remember,

understand, and clean. Try to avoid using any type of punctuation or
special characters. Usernames should also try to be the same or at
least cohesive across all social platforms. This enables users to look
you up on various platforms easily!

The next thing that people overlook, and often have poorly filled out,
is the bio. A bio is the first thing that a potential client, brand,
customer, or even follower looks at when they pull up your account.
Your bio should be able to accurately explain or highlight who or what
you are. If you’re a photographer, you may want to insert the link for
your most recent interview or your portfolio in your bio. If you’re a
blogger, you’re for sure going to want to put your niches and website
link in your bio as well.

A potential customer or client shouldn’t have to scroll down your page

to understand what you do or what you’re selling. They should be able
to tell this within the first 30 seconds of viewing your page; aka the
most recent 9 photos!

5
Lastly, lately many influencers & business moguls have been utilizing
Linktree. Linktree enables you to connect all your content and
audiences with just one link. It’s definitely a great addition to your
social media platform if you have multiple links you’d like to
showcase to your audience.

4.
WHEN BRANDS REACH OUT TO YOU

Okay… so, you got your first email or dm from a company who wants
to work with you; who has probably 10k or even 100k followers. You
quickly scroll through their Instagram thinking they’re legit… but are
they really??? Let’s talk about the BAD about when brands reach out.

First step is to do a quick analysis of the account. Does it look like

their followers are bought? In ratio to their followers, do they have a
decent amount of likes and comments? Click on their tagged posts.
Do they have any real customers who have tagged them in photos?
You may want to even do a quick google search to see if any blogs,
reddit threads, or reviews come up about them. All of this matters!
Don’t get scammed out here…

The red flags of those weird companies that look like they’re legit…
but they aren’t. They’re almost overly friendly and will compliment you
on your style or your account. They’ll mention you being provided a
discount code to share, with you earning a certain amount of
commission… blah, blah, blah. Then they try to get you to start off the
collab by purchasing something from their website first. NO! If they
ask you to buy something, you’re a customer… not an influencer.
Beware! Know your worth and don’t lowball. Opportunities come and
go, but don’t turn be a yes woman or yes man!

Take a look at the difference between these two jewelry accounts that I
found. Right off the bat, can you tell the difference between the level
of professionalism between the two? Let’s see if you can highlight all
the differences between the two…

6
Notice anything in
particular?

+ Which account looks

like their followers
match the amount of
content they post?
+ Does one account have
a more professional
looking bio?
+ Does one brand have a
more aesthetically,
cohesive feed than the
other?
+ Did they both
implement the business
account feature?
Ask yourself these questions when faced with the issue of deciding
whether to partner with a business or not.
_______________________________________________________________

Now, let’s talk about the GOOD when brands reach out. As I
mentioned earlier, there are hundreds of great brands out there. With
COVID happening; thousands of people launched businesses that are
going to need influencers and brand partnerships with people like
YOU! Don’t seem desperate when it comes to accepting
partnerships, there are enough opportunities to go around.

If you’re starting out and pretty new to brand deals, you may want to
stick to receiving free products first. Overtime, you can start building
yourself up to paid posts!

First and foremost, always thank them for their time, reaching out,
and for taking an interest in your content. They could’ve chose
anyone, but they chose you!

I’d say something like this.

7
WHEN FINDING OUT IF THEY CAN PAY YOU OR NOT
_______________________________________________________________
Hi, *INSERT BRAND HERE*,

Thank you so much for reaching out and taking an interest in my

content. Do you have a budget for this project? I’m more than happy
to send along my rate sheet!

Looking forward to your response,

*INSERT NAME*

We will talk about rate sheets later in the book, but this response starts
off with establishing the ground that you know your worth as an
entrepreneur.

Next, we talk about the different types of ways to get paid; both
monetary and not.
‣ Paid posts
‣ Free products
‣ Free shoutout aka a tagged feature
‣ Promo Codes

A company will decide to pay you a flat fee for a post or pay you to
post their product on your story for 24 hours. Or, they may not have an
extensive budget for their influencers' department and may just offer
free product in exchange for a post. One of my favorites is the last,
promo codes.

A promo code is a marketing choice used by brands for promotions

and sales to entice customers. In return, this customer is offered a
discount, the influencer gets a percentage of every order that they
brought in with their post, and the owner gets the biggest
percentage. Everyone wins!

8
Typically, I tend to like email communication over DMs. I just find that
it’s easier to go back and review information because you’ll always
have it and eliminates any accounts from un-sending messages.
However, if you find that it’s a reputable brand and feel
comfortable, then DMs are okay!

Negotiation is allowed; however, this must be taken with ease. Don’t

settle for below your worth but also don’t oversell yourself. On the
other hand… have you heard of the saying, “You never know until you
ask” or “Closed mouths don’t get fed?” Use those sayings loosely
here.

For example, a brand had reached out to me a while back and wanted
to send me skin care, specifically a cleanser and facial brush. I saw they
also had acne patches on their site and I had always wanted to try
those anyway. I asked and they happily added to my free order! It’s all
about how you ask and your tone.

Lastly, we understand what to do when we want to decline a

partnership. Or, maybe there wasn’t an agreement to a proposed offer.
You may feel like you deserve more than what they offer and want to
move on from the opportunity. What do you do?!

Down below, I’ve attached email templates you can use. Easily switch
out the brand/product names and you have a professional response!

5.
IT’S OKAY TO REACH OUT TO BRANDS

I first want to start this chapter out by saying, it is completely okay to

reach out to brands if you want to partner with them. FUN FACT!
My highest paid and biggest sponsorship was BECAUSE I reached out.
Never think that just because a brand doesn’t reach out to you that
there is no possibility you can ever work with them! Sometimes,
opportunities don’t come to you; but instead, you have to make your
own.

Before you reach out, take 1-2 weeks to engage with the brand.
Maybe comment and like a bunch of their posts. Or, if you do have
one of their products… post and tag them on your story stating how
much you love it!

Say, you do reach out to a brand and they say no. What do you do
from here? Stop your dreams of ever becoming an influencer? Beg
them to let you in? Bad talk the brand? Answer is… as you probably
assume… is none of the above! I’m not going to sweet coat like every
brand wants to partner with you… it’s not true! Sometimes, they may
be looking for someone to have a bigger social media presence or
they may want someone with a different aesthetic AND THAT IS
OKAY!!

I recently reached out to a clothing brand, who I thought, would’ve

been a great pick for me. Sadly, they declined… but it’s okay! They
even told me to reach back out in a year; due to the fact that they had
a cap of 10k followers as a minimum to be a brand ambassador.

Okay… now you may be thinking how did I reach out to the brand and
what did I say exactly? As always, I’m going to attach the email layout
that I use for my emails so you can use the same!

11
Secondly, we understand what a media kit is. A media kit is a
document that outlines key facts, statistics, and other important info
about your personal brand or business. Think of it like a more visual
and cooler resume!

Don’t worry if you’re not the best at designing or technology in

general; that is why God gave us Fiverr! Fiverr allows you to hire
professionals (at whatever price you want) to create anything… but
more specifically your media kit. Here are some of the best
professionals on the site that can help you create yours!

https://www.fiverr.com/gigs/media-kit

Checkout an example of a media kit that I found down below:

12
6.
EMAIL TEMPLATE FOR REACHING OUT

When you finally find a brand that you want to reach out to, it’s
important that we’re contacting the right person. You’ll typically be
able to find the contact email of the person who’s in charge of
influencer marketing or social media branding by searching on
LinkedIn or going directly to the website and finding their contact info.

Next, is the actual email template you can use pitching your possible
brand partnership with them! Feel free to switch out the wording when
necessary.

HOW TO PREPARE CONTENT

You just got the email confirmation that you landed your first paid post
gig!!! Now what? Here is where we learn how to prepare great
content that will lead to us getting paid later. This is the most
important part.

Quality over quantity is everything. You’d rather partner with less

brands and have quality content over partnering with new brands
almost everyday and releasing poor quality content.

The first step is to plan out your post. I typically will grab my iPad or
my notebook and write everything out so all my thoughts are in one
space. Just making sure I’m executing this post the best I can.
‣ What is the brand?
‣ Am I wearing their clothes? Or posing with products? Do I
have to have specific objects in my photo?
‣ What’s required?
‣ Photo(s)? Video(s)? An IG story?
‣ When is the post date?
‣ Do I have to get clearance and send it in before I
post? When is that date?
‣ What’s the mood or vibe of the post?
‣ Create a moodboard or look through Pinterest or
Instagram
‣ What am I going to wear?
‣ Create a moodboard or look through Pinterest or
Instagram
‣ Who’s taking photo or video?
‣ Self-Shot? Or a friend? Ask them when they’re free
and plan!

16
When it comes to shooting content, don’t think that you need
expensive equipment and cameras. You don’t at all. 99% of my
content that I shoot for Instagram and TikTok are used with my iPhone.
There are tons of editing software and apps that you can use to even
bump up the quality of your photos and videos.

Below is some equipment that I use to make my self-shot content a

little easier. Everything is within budget and under $30.

How I edit my
TikTok videos

EDITING YOUR CONTENT

You’ve taken all your photos and now you’re ready to choose the
winners! Just because I’m picky, I usually will take around 20-80
photos… and no that isn’t an exaggeration, lol. I’ll go through each
photo and heart it in my photo library. From there I delete all the ones
I don’t have a heart on and keep narrowing down with that method!

Next are the apps that I use to edit my content. Get creative with your
requirements for your post! After all, you are a content creator!

TIPS FOR GROWTH ON INSTAGRAM
I’m going to get straight to the point with this part of the eBook…
these are tips. Use them. Consistently. You will see growth. Trust me.

‣ Make your account public.

‣ Switch over your all social media accounts to be business
accounts.
‣ Post your location after you’ve left that space.
‣ Use highlights from your past stories.
‣ Tag the brand you’re drinking, wearing, using, or eating. Go
to their profile to see if they have any hashtags they look
through to be featured and add if necessary.

‣ Go through & view your page as if you were someone else.

Is the flow of content appealing? Does a picture stand out in
a bad way?
‣ Be consistent. Post stories everyday. Try to make an effort to
post content 1x-3x a week.
‣ Change up the type of content you post. Try individual
photos. Try carousel posts (more than one post). Try videos.
Try IGTV. Try reels.

The last two things are some of the important points.

19
Hashtags are important when growing and maintaining consistent
growth. If you don’t know, a hashtag is a keyword phrase and great
way for influencers and brands to make their posts more visible and
increase engagement across the platform.

When choosing hashtags, it’s important to first search them on

Instagram. Each hashtag should have a reach of around 100K. A
hashtag with a reach of around 1M is a little too broad. Reach is the
total number of people who see your post.

For example, try searching the following hashtags and see if you notice
a difference in the reach.

#ootd #allblackfits

If you want to start growing with a small following, be sure to use the
following tips to help:
‣ Comment your hashtags; don’t keep them in caption
‣ Post between 20-30 per post
‣ Use the app/website, MetaHashtags; helps with generating
working hashtags

Another important aspect to take away from this eBook is to keep in

mind that in order to grow, you must be social. Being social on social
media doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re physically going out. The
social aspect stands in engaging with others on Instagram (and all
other social media platforms) through liking, commenting, and
reshaping to stories. Comment on your friends new brand post!
Reshare your friends new brand post on your story!

In your free time, find similar accounts to yours or ones you look up
to. Go through their content. Like & comment on their posts. This
brings attention to your profile not only from them but others who are
looking at their content as well. FREE MARKETING FOR YOURSELF!

11.
TIPS FOR GROWTH ON TIKTOK

TikTok… that one app that everyone swore they said they would never
download. Then quarantine happened. 800 million active users a day.

You’d be surprised at the information people look for. Relationship

advice, homework help, new restaurants, new workouts, and so much
more. Who knows? A video you're thinking of creating now could be
one that someone is looking for tomorrow. Let’s get started now!

Assert a niche; this should be easy! If you’re an mua, do makeup

tutorials. If you are a fashion blogger, do outfit hauls. TikTok is such a
fun and creative platform for creatives; the possibilities are endless
with content.

Link your Instagram, Youtube, website, email or Linktree, in your

bio. Don’t just type it out; make sure to create a quick link that goes
directly to your outlets.

Create a good cover image and cover caption once the video is
posted. This is important, dependent upon the niche of your content.
This gives the viewer an idea of what they’re watching before they click
on the video.

21
Every month or two, new sounds on TikTok go viral and are popular. If
you’re thinking of making a new video, make sure to use the current
trending sounds to use your video with! This will help with
engagement and bring your video into the stream of millions of
videos.

If you use inspiration from someone else’s video… tag them. They
may end up duet-ing you… which is basically a free shoutout!

Make sure your video is able to capture someones attention within

the first 10 seconds. If you can’t catch the viewers attention within 10
seconds, they go onto the next video!

When you edit, use various effects. Green screen, bling, or any of the
other trending effects. The key overall is to use and do what’s trending!

This is one tip that gets people down all the time. DO NOT be upset
by low views. Just give it time! One of my most viral videos had less
than 500 views in the first couple weeks. Let it grow naturally.

Hashtags are important here. Try to limit the amount of extra hashtags
you use. Try to limit them to be specific to what you’re showing in
the video. For instance, if you’re posting a new workout video… try to
generate your hashtags like this.
‣ #homeworkout (what it is)
‣ #bootyworkout (more specified)
‣ #gymshark (outfit you’re wearing)
‣ #bodyinspo (someone may search this to
find inspiration and come across your
video)… feel free to put more

Use your analytics to know what sounds and videos

your followers are watching/saving. Cater to your
audience and use the same sounds that you see
them listening too!

22
12.
DON’T SLEEP ON PINTEREST

I saw a TikTok about posting your content from all your other socials
on Pinterest to drive traffic to your photos and videos. It’s basically a
search engine for anything and is slept on so much! It’s such a great
way to get your content out there public!

I relate to this as the idea of seeing one person on your page. They’re
interested in your posts and may fall in love with your fashion sense.
From there, they may want to follow you on Instagram, Youtube,
TikTok, checkout your website… etc. Next, they happen to click on the
linktree link in your bio. BOOM. They’re able to follow you on all your
social media platforms and checkout any other links. You just helped
an audience member from your Pinterest page get crossed into
other channels of your personal brand or business!

That’s why it’s important to create good content that people are
interested in; therefore they want to see what else you do and
checkout other portions of your brand.

It is free to post content on Pinterest; however, you can also pay as

low as $1 to advertise posts. You could advertise your new business,
your blog, or your social media account. Think smarter, not harder!
Now, moving on…

First thing to do is create a business Pinterest account. Second, you

want to create the ‘boards’ aka categories for the content you’re
going to post. Literally anything to categorize and organize your
images/photos. This could be: TikToks, Outfit Inspo, Recipes,
Workouts, Selfies, etc.

25
Next is to finally upload, type up a description, and tag key words.
Find the right keywords by typing in your primary keyword into
Pinterest. Take all of the keywords down below from the results and
utilize those words in your title, description, and tagged words.

WHAT TO POST
_______________________________________________________________
Photos
‣ Outfits
‣ Decor
‣ Scenery
‣ Aesthetically pleasing images (whatever that means to you)
‣ Photos with text (recipes, inspiration messages, workouts)
‣ Really anything that you think will capture someone’s
attention or will be helpful
‣ …or go look on Pinterest for inspiration, don’t think too hard

(Quick) Videos
‣ Tiktoks
‣ IG Reels
‣ Workouts
‣ Hair Tutorials
‣ Makeup Tutorials

Use an eye-catching template when you upload your Pinterest

content. Canva works great and has a lot of great themes and
tools to help you create the perfect template for you!

STAYING AUTHENTIC TO YOU

At this point, the only thing left is to genuinely understand who/

what you are as a brand or business. Haven’t you noticed lately more
young people traveling? Making money? Establishing businesses?
Doing well on social media? They each made sure to stay true to what
worked for them and what made them special.

Don't think that you have to change who you are to be successful.
There are so many different types of people who are successful. There
are successful people in the fashion industry, in the food industry, the
engineering industry, real estate industry, flooring industry, furniture
industry, fitness industry… and so much more.

Yes, it’s possible to use other people for inspiration for your personal
brand or business or photoshoot or whatever it is. However, it’s always
important to take inspiration and make it your own.

ENCOURAGEMENT

Now you’ve learned all you need to know from this eBook. I hope that
you take in this information for a couple days, let it marinate, get some
ideas and work toward any ideas that may have sparked during
reading this.

It’s no doubt that it’s mentally exhausting creating a business, starting

something new, or even starting something in general. I hope that
you’re able to assert yourself, utilize your free time, stay focused, stay
committed, and achieve whatever goals you have set for yourself.

Without careful planning, it’s hard to achieve anything without the

proper structure first. Plan out your goals and work on them everyday
for minimum of 1 hour. Just imagine where you could be in 6 months!!
Every you want in the world is already out there; it’s just the
precise process of taking all the steps to get what you want!

Overall, I hope you enjoyed this walkthrough of everything I’ve

personally know and learned through social media, so far. I hope you
can use it toward your social media accounts to grow and monetize off
of it!

What’s left is a glossary with some important key terms that I

mentioned throughout the reading. Make sure to read these
thoroughly so you understand what they mean. These words may pop
up when you’re negotiating contracts or even speaking with someone
about a possible partnership!

Good luck on your journey!

xoxo,
