Course Objectives.
This course will survey fundamental concepts and approaches of analyzing data commonly encountered by a
manager in business. Recognition of problems, application of techniques, and communication of results are
emphasized through lectures, assignments, and exams. The approach to the material in this course will
include the progressive objectives of a basic understanding of the underlying concepts, a proficiency in the
application of techniques, an ability to evaluate and critique data analysis results, and experience in
communicating results in a business environment. This course should provide a student the capability to
independently acquire a workable solution to commonly encountered data analysis problems or to be an
effective leader or contributor in a team effort dealing with statistical or data analytic issues.

Page 3
Policies and Procedures.
The policies and procedures in this syllabus will be followed in this course and applies to every student.
In taking this course, each student is responsible to know and adhere to the policies and procedures in
the syllabus.

Course Structure.
This course contains online material, reading material, homework assignments, an exam, and a project.
Course grade is based solely on student’s grade measure performance of homework assignments, project, and
exam expressed as a grade percentage. Determine grade percentage as the percentage of points earned out of
the total possible points. Grades are not negotiated. No +/- grades. No curves. No extra credit. In calculating
course grades, normal rounding conventions are used.
Follow the common rounding convention for calculations in this course especially related to grades,
assignments, and exam. Never round during calculations. Only round presentations. If rounding to the unit
digit, then 1.5 is rounded to 2 and 1.4 is rounded to 1. Specifically, a number, X, with a value 1.5≤X<2.5 is
rounded to 2.0 if rounding to the unit digit.
Material in the prerequisite courses is required before taking this course. Prerequisite material will not be
covered in this course since students are expected to know the prerequisite material before coming into this
course.
The answers and points earned for each assignment will be posted on Canvas. Course grade will not be posted
on Canvas but reported to the registrar.
Nothing is accepted or considered after the end of the course.

Collaboration.
Although collaboration is encouraged throughout this course to learn the material, each student is required to
submit original work. No collaboration is allowed on the exam. Only submit an originally composed
individual project report.

Discussions are provided on Canvas between students to discuss course material. Use the Canvas discussions
between classmates for asking questions about the course material, answering questions about the course
material, and other communications helpful for learning.

Collaboration is the responsibility of each student. Lack of collaboration does not eliminate a student’s
responsibility to submit assignments when due. If a tutor is used, which is the responsibility of the student, be
careful to use the tutor appropriately.

Communication.

Live Streams include a chat room for questions. Apart from Live Stream chat rooms, questions about the
material should be posted as a discussion in Canvas. Students are expected to communicate through questions
and answers about the material and the course through discussions in Canvas and not through Canvas
messaging or email. I will answer questions about the material through discussions in Canvas and not through
email or Canvas messaging. Only use email or Canvas messaging for personal communications.
Should email be necessary for personal communication, use the email address [ Mike.Harper@ucdenver.edu ]
and include “BANA 2010” in the subject area.

Page 4
Homework.
For each Homework Assignment, questions will be posted on Canvas in a Word file. Download the questions.
Utilize the learning resources to learn the material and obtain answers to the questions. Finally, submit answers
through Canvas.

Carefully follow this procedure to submit homework answers through Canvas. Download the questions from
Canvas which will be in a Word file. Obtain answers for all the multiple-choice questions. Only when all the
answers are ready to submit, submit all the answers only once through Canvas. Each student is responsible to
submit answers through Canvas correctly, completely and on time. Answers may be submitted only once.
Assignments submitted will be accepted as an entire assignment and graded as an entire assignment. Once you
begin submission, you have only 60 minutes to submit all the answers to an assignment. But all the answers
must be submitted on or before the due date and time for the assignment. The due date and time are strictly
enforced by Canvas. Canvas will not allow submission after the due date and time even during the 60-minute
time window. The entire assignment must be submitted on or before the due date and time indicated. No late
assignments are accepted. Assignments not submitted have a grade of zero. The answers to the assignments
will be posted online after the due date. No partial credit.

Exam.
An examination will be given during this course. Exam will be online through Canvas, multiple-choice, timed,
and designed for evaluation.
Each student must take their own exam. No collaboration is allowed. Collaboration is cheating and represents
academic dishonesty. If academic dishonest occurs on the exam, the student will receive a zero for the exam.
Any incident of academic dishonesty may be reported to Internal Affairs Committee of the Business School at
the University of Colorado at Denver for further action.
Exam is open-books and open-notes. The use of a calculator or Excel is allowed. No communication devices are
allowed such as cell phones.
No exam taken will result in a zero for the exam. No exam will be considered after the end of the course.
Collaboration is encouraged to aid in learning the material but not required. Although collaboration is
encouraged, students are expected to perform their own work. The homework assignments are designed as
an introduction and development of the material but not intended to be a complete coverage of the material.

Page 5
Projects.
Each student is required to select one scenario from a set of business scenarios provided during the course, and
originally compose a three-page report. Each business scenario will contain a problem, set of data, and
request. The three-page report will include an analysis of the data, a response to the problem, and a defense
of your analysis, conclusions, or recommendations.

The originally composed individual project report shall demonstrate the student’s knowledge of statistics and
an ability to effectively communicate the knowledge appropriate to a business environment. Each individual
report must be unique. Each individual report must be professionally composed.

Submit the completed individual report only through Canvas as a PDF file on or before the due date and time.
Each report may only be submitted once, may only be submitted as a complete report, and must be submitted
by the due date and time. A report not submitted has a grade of zero. No late reports accepted. Each
student is required to submit original material for their individual report. Although collaboration is
encouraged to understand the problem, collaboration does not include copying from another student or
allowing a student to copy from you on individual work that is submitted.

Submit your report through Canvas as a PDF file. Do not use a cover page but use the title below on the first
page where the student supplies the information in italics.
