Curriculum Development

Curriculum development is defined as planned, a purposeful,


progressive, and systematic process to create positive improvements in the
educational system. Every time there are changes or developments happening
around the world, the school curricula are effect. There is a need to update
them to address the society’s needs.
Thus, curriculum can be define as a plan for what is to taught in
schools. It consists of topics of topic to be taught at all levels in the primary
level. Designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments are steps teachers
use to help them make sense of the concepts they teach and helps drive
instruction. These steps can take on many different forms and drive a
classroom in a plethora of ways. These steps, when developed properly, can
help a teacher utilize each moment in the classroom and help students gain
more insight to the standards they need to become proficient. Curriculum,
Instruction and Assessment Curriculum development is the first step used by
a teacher to help them develop engaging lessons. One of the most useful tools
to help develop curriculum is backwards design.
Stakeholder of the Curriculum

The stakeholders of the curriculum are the individuals or the institution


that are interested on the curriculum. They are the part of the community
where the school belongs. Hence, they play various role in the school.
The first stakeholders are the learners, they are the core of the current
curriculum, since everything should revolve around the learner’s interest,
needs, abilities, and capabilities. The nature of the learner must be made the
science of learning. The experiences of the learners must be starting point in
accomplishing goals of education, to let them grow in knowledge, skills,
abilities, and attitudes. Furthermore, the primary function of the school’s
existence is to educate the learners, to further thrive the learners in
globalization they must be competitive and wise to serve the country. A
curriculum is effective if it empowers all learners to incorporate the acquired
knowledge into real world experience.
Secondly, the teacher as curriculum developers and implementers. The
teacher is responsible for the teaching and learning process within the school.
Thus, curriculum is developed and implemented by a teacher during the
process, it is to ensure the quality education of the learners. The teachers
address the goal, interest, and needs of the learners by creating experiences
from where the students can learn.
Thirdly, in a school organization, there is always a curriculum manager
or school administrator. In fact, for school principals, one of their functions is
being a curriculum manager. The decision making in terms of school’s
purpose rests upon the shoulders of school administrators. Meanwhile, school
administrators have a significant role in the academic institutions, they have a
great concern with regards the variety of curriculum the school offer and how
these is implemented.
The forth stakeholder is the parent, they support the curriculum. “I
work hard to support my child’s need in school”. It simply means that parents
are best support of the school, especially because they are the ones paying for
their child’s education. An effective parental involvement in school affairs
may be linked to parent educational program which is central to high quality
educational experiences of the children. It is a well-known fact that where
you find an involved parent, you find better communication between home
and school. The parent’s involvement extends from the confine of the school
to the homes. The parents become part of the environment of learning at
home. Thus, parents follow up the lesson of their children especially in basic
education. In fact, in most schools the parent association is organized.
The community members as curriculum resources. Success upon the
implementation of curriculum lays upon the curriculum resources. Taking
students on a field trips or using other community resources in the classes in
not a new idea for teachers. Often, however these experiences are thought to
be frill or rewards that complete instructional time in class. Those are the
basic use of community resources. In some case, respected community
members may be included in school boards, some can become resource
speakers, others can work on action. They provide local and indigenous
knowledge in school curriculum.
Lastly, the other stakeholders. Some stakeholders may not have direct
influence in the school curriculum. The stakeholders include the agencies or
professional organizations, though have shown great influence in school
curriculum. They are involved in planning, design, implementation and
evaluation of the school curriculum. Some example of this stakeholders are
the; government agencies namely the Department of Education (DepEd) for
basic education. DepEd is a compulsory education wherein every child must
attend and accomplish first before passing the Commission on Higher
Education (CHED). CHED is responsible for the learner’s tertiary education,
in this level of education the students are able to train their desired profession
and get them ready for the future. For those who wants to be a teacher, they
need to pass the licensure examination from the Professional Regulation
Commission (PRC). PRC certifies and issues teacher licenses to quality one
to teach. CSC affirms the appointment of teachers in the public schools.
