Situation updates:
Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Baluchistan reported that earthquake caused
376 (330 from Awaran and 46 from Kech) deaths with 594 injuries reported from Awaran and 240
from Kech. The official data reveals 160,000 people affected in district Awaran and 25,000 people in
Kech. The updates also include 32,000 affected families in Awaran and 5,000 families in Kech
whereas 20,000 houses in Awaran and 1000 houses in Kech are partially or completely damaged.
PDMA Balochistan has declared UCs Awaran, Teertaij, Gishkore, Gajjar, Nokjo & Parwar “Calamity hit
areas” in Awaran while Dandar and Hoshap in Kech. PDMA Baluchistan has allowed all United Nation
Agencies for localized response, however, all national and local NGOs have to obtain NOC from
government before implementing any project.

In Tehsil Mashkai and Awaran, most of the health facilities are damaged and non-functional; DHQ
Awaran is providing health care services to the affected people. In Awaran 7 BHUs are affected, 3
BHUs are fully damaged and 2 partially damaged while 2 BHUs are intact. Eight Civil Dispensaries in
Tehsil Awaran are damaged and no proper health care services are available. Another request of
medicines received from DG Health Services, asking for 1 Inter Agency Emergency Health Kit (IEHK)
and 3 Diarrheal Disease Kits (DDKs) along with anti-malarial medicines, Bed nets, and
Environmental Health related items for the affected districts of Balochistan. District Health Officer
Awaran requires urgent support of LLINs and RDTs for malarial medicines.

Health Response:
The first Health Cluster Coordination Meeting has been scheduled on Monday 7th October, 2013 in
DGHS office, Link Saryab road Quetta from 11:00 am till 12:30 pm.
The consultation of diarrheal disease is revealing a prominent rise from 26th Sep to 2nd Oct-2013
from the affected locations followed by a sudden rise in the consultation of Suspected Malaria which
is twice the %age of suspected malaria reported few days before.
The NGOs staff trained on mini MIRA have completed the assessment which shows 6 UCs out of 8
were severely damaged as assessed by the assessment teams. 245 villages were covered during
assessment and assessment findings will be available soon.
Pakistan Red Crescent, Muslim Hands, Helping Hands, Pakistan Relief, Al-Khidmat Foundation,
Khidmat-e-Khalq foundation, EDHI foundation and NRSP are providing health care and other relief
services to the affected people. 46 Doctors and 63 Paramedics are serving in Awaran district at
Mashkey and Awaran town whereas 6 doctors and 8 paramedics are working at Dandaar district
Kech.
Disease Early Warning System is functional at both the affected districts. DEWS team is keeping close
coordination with DOH, local NGOs and INGOs. Daily data collection, from both districts, has started
and being shared since 26th Sep-2013 in form of daily bulletin. The WHO Daily DEWS report reveals
a total of (11,851) consultations from both the districts of which injuries are contributing
remarkable proportion i.e. (605) followed by ARI 2167 (18%), Acute Diarrhea 1,612 (14%) and
Suspected Malaria 1020 (9%).

Fig-1 is stating the daily disease trend from district Awaran. The consultation of Acute Diarrhea and Suspected Malaria is
varying on daily basis whereas consultation of ARI is rising with a steady trend. The fluctuation in diarrheal and malaria
disease could be the possible as a result of the in-taking of contaminated water with living under open sky.
