Philosophy of Education

The spark that created my interest in the profession of Education started when I

was growing up and seeing my mother teaching and tutoring around our household. This

fascination continued to grow as she brought me to her different schools and centers,

wherein I dove deeper into this new environment. I observed and learned as I saw

children and adults working together, which became the biggest value in my personal

educational philosophy.

Education is such a vast and ever-changing field around the world and the only

thing we have to be consistent with is the teamwork within the people involved. My

personal educational philosophy focuses on values of respect, the love of helping and

being the best versions of us, whether you are the educator or the student. This mindset of

mine has helped me further on this profession and nurtured me to become the best that I

can become, not only for myself but also most especially for the people around me.

Working hard to reach goals and ambitions is such an important task for me but going on

your own pace to achieve these is what I value the most. The story behind each success is

still the best thing you can give yourself, learning within the lessons of life and

knowledge.

As an International Student from the Philippines and a former early childhood

educator back in my hometown, I have had my shares of interactions with students of

different ages and even those with disabilities. Aside from having at least one student

with a disability in my regular classroom set-up, I was blessed to have dance classes with

students with Down syndrome and I can say those were the best memories I had as a

teacher! I was a dance teacher for children and adolescents as well, and having the chance

to teach students with disabilities challenged me and at the same time made each

experience more meaningful and memorable. It amazed me with how they sustained and

tried their best to follow every instruction and step I would ask them to perform. It truly

proved my educational philosophy that working hard, striving and believing in one’s self

will help you be your best version whether it be in your education or other interests in

life.

Being in this profession for a few years now, I have been exposed to different

teaching strategies for different age groups. I am big fan of the progressive education

which was headed by John Dewey. During my college years and my first teaching job, I

was under this teaching philosophy which I believe is best for children in their early years

of development. But as I got another job towards dance for an older group of students, I

used the traditional ways of teaching. Being in both situations, I believe that different age

groups have different effective teaching techniques that work best of the students. As I

am taking numerous courses on diversity and special education, I have learned a lot of

ways to strive to make the classroom free of biases and judgment. As a future educator, I

will go out of my way to research on my students’ cultures and make sure these are given

enough attention in school. I will promote diversity by exposing my students with these

cultural traditions and make available more resources like books and artifacts they can

learn from.

I believe to be an effective educator, you have to go beyond what is expected of

you. Genuine care and love for your students should be the core of your profession to be

able to continue serving the youth of our future generation. Aside from these, I see the

skills of communication, time management, and organization skills are some of the most

important to continue the career in education. I target to finish my bachelor’s here in the

US and continue to study for my master’s degree to make sure I am the best version of

my professional self in this career. When I get back to my hometown, I will share all the

knowledge I learned from here to be able to make a difference in the education sector of

the Philippines. As a person and an educator, I am open to improving and learning from

mistakes. I am always open-minded and I appreciate people who help me better myself,

which is why I want to learn how to control my emotional judgments. Which is why I am

also open in trying activities and services related to education like day care or

volunteering in centers to be able to at least get experience in interacting with children

here in the United States.
