IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEM AND ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION

Architectural Design Thesis Writing is the most dreaded requirement of most Architecture
students once they set foot on the 5th year stage, the final stage before earning a degree in BS
Architecture.  Going through this course is not a walk in the park because it requires hard work
but it is not as dreadful as one expects.  Woe to the lazy but cheers to those who wish to be
trained to be more responsible, disciplined, diligent, and more aware of societal, environmental
and human problems where architecture can have a hand in.

To chip off little by little the enwrapping fear, let us start off with understanding the
course.  Architecture thesis proposal writing is the first step that leads you to design thesis
writing which can be done within the semester if you want to start ahead with it, or in the next
semester.  Prior to this course, it is expected that you have already taken and passed the course,
Research Methods.  It will be useful for you once you reach the part when you have to identify
the appropriate method(s) to gather data.

To simply describe the course, it requires you to do a two-fold activity.  The first phase is
conducting research and the second phase is design application of the data you gathered from
the research conducted.

RESEARCH   +   PROPOSED ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT   =   ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THESIS

So, through research, you will gather the necessary data that you will use in order to
develop a good architectural design.  But what architectural design should you develop?  Read
the steps below on how to start off with architectural thesis proposal writing.

1. Think and choose of a problem which you think can be provided partly or wholly of a
solution through architecture.  There are many problems but choose one closest to
your heart that you have awareness of or you wish to have deeper awareness.  Instead
of a problem, you can also choose opportunities.

2. After choosing a problem that you might wish to solve architecturally in part or in
whole, think of an architectural solution or

3. project appropriate to that problem.  Or, if you have identified opportunities, think of
an architectural project that could make use of them and derive benefits from.  After
identifying a problem or opportunities and the corresponding architectural project, do
not fix your choice yet.  Ask yourself first if you have interest in that kind of project.
Remember that in choosing a thesis topic, it is wise to choose one that captures your
interest so you get to enjoy both the research and design activities.

These two steps are the initial major steps that you have to carefully take.  In Phase 1
of this course, you will do these steps.

PHASE 1
Choosing a problem to solve architecturally (or identifying opportunities that can be
complemented with an architectural project)
To expand your awareness on the many kinds of present and possible future problems in this
world and present opportunities, read articles or watch news videos or documentaries that
touch on or relevant to the following fields:

1.      Natural environment
2.      Relationship between the natural environment and man-made environment
3.      Housing
4.      Natural disasters and climate change
5.      Human disasters or conflicts
6.      Waste generation
7.      Urbanization
8.      Education
9.      Tropical Design
10.   Economy
11.   Health care
12.   Parks
13.   Roads and Transport
14.   Recreation and Leisure
15.   Security
16.   Other fields that impact human and space.

Let me stress that the chosen problem may be an existing and persistent problem or a problem
that is likely to occur in the future.
