Opportunity Springs
from Arizona Tragedy
Unfortunately, it often takes a tragedy to open our eyes and that is certainly the case with the shooting
rampage in Arizona. On January 8, 22‐year‐old Jared Lee Loughner opened fire in a
Tuscon, AZ shopping center parking lot where U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords was holding an
open meeting for her constituents. Twenty people were injured, of them six were fatally wounded.
Much of the press surrounding this terrible act of violence has focused on Loughner’s mental status—
how former classmates and teachers noticed his strange behavior and were concerned about his men‐
tal stability. And while we cannot ignore the fact that Loughner was in desperate need of treatment,
we cannot allow his acts to reinforce the misconception that people struggling with mental illness are
dangerous— if we do, we are only encouraging stigma.
Increased stigma means people will be more reluctant to seek treatment and we can’t let that happen. Instead we need to fight
against it by providing outreach, education, and sharing our personal success stories. Mental health treatment is both effective
and available, and it is our job to spread that message. So here’s how YOU can help:
♦ Write letters to the editor of your local and national newspapers.
♦ Post positive articles on your blogs and social networking accounts.
♦ Offer to share your story at local schools, colleges, universities and town meetings.
Bad news may travel fast, but success stories can last longer and have a greater impact. Don’t be afraid to tell your story. Now
is the time for recovery to shine!
