A. Based on the characters mentioned in the novel Noli Me Tangere:

1. Choose one character that you most resonate with and explain why.
Among the characters in the novel, Noli Me Tangere. The one that I most resonate with is
Elias. He is not the main character of the novel nor the main protagonist, but that’s what I like
the most in Elias because I believe that we don’t have to be the main character of a story to be
significant, we just have to live our lives to create harmony. In addition, one thing why I choose
Elias as the character that I most resonate with is because of his loyalty, I am a person who
doesn’t look at the past of other people. Just like Elias, even though Ibarra’s family oppressed
his, they continue to have a strong friendship. Elias is also a grateful person, he values those
people he has a debt of gratitude (utang na loob). But among the values and doings of Elias, the
thing that really says that its me and were the same, is his participation in disenchanted
revolutionaries. I am a person that always stood up against something, I always speak out the
truth and contradict other people’s opinions, especially when they are wrong as well as Elias.
Lastly, one last thing I adore about him is that he sacrificed himself just to save his friend which
I think I also can do in the future.
Does your selected character represent a modern counterpart today? Explain who
and why.
Yes, Miriam Defensor Santiago is the modern counterpart of Elias today. Miriam
Defensor Santiago is a lawyer, a Filipina academic, judge, author, and stateswoman, who served
in all three branches of the Philippine government: judicial, executive, and legislative. In my
own opinion, Miriam is the counterpart of Elias today as they were both known for their
brilliance and courage to fight against corruption. Miriam was the one who started the national
plunder investigation which investigates politicians and became a historic scandal. She revealed
the pork barrel system and disclose that the senate president uses the senate funds in order to
give away cash gifts in 2012. Just like Elias, they both speak out and reveal the malfeasances of
the officials at different timelines. In addition, she was also a good friend to everyone, it can be
seen at her funeral that the whole country was in sorrow and gave sympathy. Lastly, they both do
the best and always chose the heroic choice even at their last breaths.

3. How is the lack of freedom portrayed in the novel?
Through Dr. Jose Rizal 's writings, he had the option to bring issues to light among the
Filipinos about their freedom during the Spanish era. In the novel, it can significantly notice the
inequalities between gender, social status and family line during the Spanish regime. Filipino
women have no right to go to universities to study, which can be noticed in the novel that most
of the students in the universities are male, for example, Macarig and Sandoval .Women are also
not allowed to participate in professional work and work openly with people, although they can
run their business. In addition, it can be seen in the novel the unrightful usage of Spanish flags in
the vessels. In addition, native Filipinos, who were called as Indios, is a perfect example of
discrimination during the Spanish regime as these people can be sold and has no rights on their
own. The Illustrados were the only one that can go to school. In conclusion, the lack of freedom
was noticeable portrayed in the novel.
4. El Felibusterismo is the second novel written by Philippine national hero José Rizal. It is the

sequel to Noli Me Tángere and, like the first book, was written in Spanish. It continues the Noli's
criticisms of the abuses and corruption perpetrated by the Spanish government. It has been an
advisory to the Philippines to fight the colonizers & a reminder of our history today. The
situation before was far from the situation today. Before, only those Illustrados have access to
education, today everyone has the right to go to school. Mostly the women before are uneducated
because they are seen as less and treated unfairly, but today, everyone can be educated and
equality became much more noticeable. Wars, fights are also pertinent before due to the
colonization of other countries but today there is much more stronger laws regarding the
proprietorship of countries.
