Name: Character and Setting WEEK 16

Theme DAY 5

READ THE PASSAGE   Think about what Charlie says and does in the story.

All Aboard!
Charlie checked the stagecoach before anyone boarded. He squatted on his heels
next to the wooden wheels. Each one was bolted tight, and there wasn’t a crack to be
seen. He climbed to the top of the coach and tugged the leather straps. The mailbags
were tightly secured. Then he gave the horses a careful look. Their harnesses and reins
showed no signs of fraying.
Once the coach was ready, Charlie yelled, “All aboard!” The passengers climbed into
the coach. They sat across from each other, so close that their knees bumped together.
Bags jammed the floor. Before Charlie could put the coach in motion, Rory from the town
newspaper hurried up to him. He thought Charlie should know that a heavy rainstorm was
heading toward the main road.
Charlie carefully considered his options. If he took the usual route, the road might be
washed out. The stagecoach’s wheels could get stuck in mud. The windows in the coach
could not be closed, so the rain would surely soak his passengers.
If he tried to go around the storm, the ride to the next town would take longer. And it
was a rutted back road full of holes. The passengers would be bounced around, but they
would be dry. Charlie wanted to get to the destination as fast as possible. But he always
did what was best for his passengers.
