Mid Sem

This document contains a mid-semester exam for a Chemical Engineering course on Separation Processes I. The exam contains 5 multi-part questions testing various concepts related to diffusion, mass transfer coefficients, equilibrium stages, and packed bed design. Specifically, question 1 tests calculation of steady-state flux, question 2 tests surface renewal theory and calculation of mass transfer coefficients, question 3 tests relationships between mass transfer coefficients, question 4 tests equipment used to control liquid levels and potential issues in packed beds, and question 5 tests countercurrent absorption processes and calculation of equilibrium stages required.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

SECOND SEMESTER 2018-2019
Weightage:25% Course: CHE F244 Separation Processes I Date:15/3/2019
Maximum marks:50M Mid semester (Closed Book) Maximum time :90 min
1.(a)With example of fish swimming in river explain the terms J A and NA.
(b)Derive the relation for finding flux with A diffusing and B non diffusing from fundamental equations in case of
diffusion in liquids.
(c)An ethanol (A)-water (B) solution in the form of a stagnant film 2.0 mm thick at 293 K is in contact at one surface
with an organic solvent in which ethanol is soluble and water is insoluble. At point 1the concentration of ethanol is
16.8 wt % and the solution density is 972.8 kg/m3. At point 2 the concentration of ethanol is 6.8 wt % and solution
density is 988.1kg/m3. The diffusivity of ethanol is 0.740 x 10-9 m2/s. Calculate the steady-state flux NA. (2+4+4)

2.(a)With the help of neat diagram explain surface renewal theory and how do we calculate the mass transfer
coefficient in it.
(b) A large volume of pure gas (B) at 2 atm absolute pressure is flowing over a surface from which pure (A) is
evaporating. The liquid (A) completely wets the surface which is a blotting paper. Hence the partial pressure of (A) at
the surface is the vapor pressure of (A) at 298 K which is (0.2 atm.). The K`y has been estimated to be (6.78*10-5
kmol / s.m 2. mol fraction). Calculate the vaporizing rate (NA), and the individual mass transfer coefficient Kg.
(4+6)

3(a)With help of neat diagram prove that 1/Kx=1/mky+1/kx

(b) The solute A is being absorbed from a gas mixture of A and B in a wetted-wall tower with the liquid flowing as a
film downward along the wall. At certain point in the tower the bulk gas concentration y AG = 0.380 mol fraction and
the bulk liquid concentration is xAL = 0.1. The tower is operating at 298 K and 1.013 x 10 5 Pa and the equilibrium
data are as follows:
xA 0 0.05 0.1 0.15 0.2 0.25 0.3 0.35
yA 0 .022 0.052 0.087 0.131 0.187 0.265 0.385
The solute A diffuse through stagnant B in the gas phase and then through a nondiffusing liquid.
Using correlations for dilute solutions in wetted-wall towers, the film mass-transfer coefficient for A in the gas
phase is predicted as :
ky’ = 1.465 x 10-3 kg mol A/s.m2 mol frac.
And for the liquid phase as
kx’ = 1.967 x 10-3 kg mol A/s.m2 mol frac.
Calculate the interface concentrations yAi and xAi and the flux NA. (5+5)

4.(a) What is equipment used to maintain the level of liquid in tray tower?, write few line about it.
(b)What is the role of packing restrainer and packing support in packed columns. Write in detail.
(c) With help of neat diagram explain about channeling in packed bed. (2+4+4)
5(a) When do you used cocurrent counter arrangement in packed bed. Define stripping factor and explain the terms in
it.
A gas stream containing 90 mol% N2 and 10% CO2 is passed through an absorber, in which pure and cool water at 5 o
C is used as a solvent. The operation is assumed to be isothermal at 5 o C and isobaric at 10 atm The liquid flow rate is
2 times the minimum liquid flow rate min Ls min.Determine the number of equilibrium stages required to absorb 92
mol% of CO2 Given Henry’s constant of CO2 in water at 5 o C of 876 atm/mole fraction.
(i) Represent the process diagrammatically labelling concentrations, flowrates
(ii) Find the Ls min and exit flow concentration (2+8)
