1. INTRODUCTION
Enzyme is defined as biological catalyst and a protein mostly however could be RNA. The rate
of a specific chemical reaction in the cell can be speed using an enzyme. During the reaction
the enzyme is not destroyed. Enzyme also can be used again. There are many different types
of enzyme molecules in a cell and each enzyme is specified for certain chemical reaction.
Besides that, as for enzyme application, in various industrial processes, enzymes are very
beneficial catalyst as they accomplish very specifically during specified processing step in
manufacturing a product. Enzyme can be used in the same method as nature does because they
are originated from nature. They help consumers by providing environmental friendly products.
This could be achieved by manufacturing using less water, energy and raw materials thus less
wastes generated. For about 400 everyday consumer and commercial products could be made
and improved by using the enzyme. Enzyme uses are for foods and beverages processing,
household cleaning, animal nutrition, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, textiles, and biofuel for
cars and generate energy.
Food industry used enzyme widely to process raw materials to produce various products such
as meat products, bakery products, dairy, fruit products, beer and wine. Many technical
applications used enzyme such as removing ink of recycle papers, removing starch, grease and
protein stains (dishwashing and laundry detergents), removing impurities and provide a stone
washed effect (textile processing and fabric finishing) and break down starch and cellulose into
fermentable sugars by producing ethanol. Pharmaceutical sector has been using enzyme to
promote wound healing, diagnose diseases and kill microorganisms that cause diseases. Uses
of these products in pharmaceutical sector has been driven by large demand from the
consumers, population and diseases awareness from people as well as their results.
In sector of research and biotechnology, investments have been increasing due to innovation
of medicines and diagnostic solutions in which enzymes market propelled by this factor. This
sector is expected to drive by the increases of medicinal drugs, extensive research activities
and strong funding initiatives. Thus, the product demand for the next years can be fulfilled. In
Malaysia, the market of bio-catalyst is a rising market.
1.1 ENZYME MARKET VALUE
For globally, enzymes market was valued at USD 9.9 billion in 2019. This market is
anticipated to thrive from 2020 to 2027 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1%.
Many industries for instance food and drinks, biogas, animal feed and house cleaning have
been increasing their demands, thus anticipated to propel the market growth over prediction
time. The increases of consciousness among customers on their health nowadays lead to
increasing intake of superfood products. This is foreseen to drive the needs of product for
the coming years.
Figure 1: Global enzyme market by geography in which the highest CAGR of 7.8%
during 2018-2024 that would be exhibited by Asia-Pacific region.
Based on region, the study of global market in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and
LAMEA. In which, Asia-Pacific including Malaysia country (see Figure 2) is expected to
lead the enzyme market during the analysis term due to elevated rate of chronic diseases,
increase in net incomes, and more consciousness among patient about enzymes based
pharmaceuticals and protein engineering methods.
Table 1: Enzyme market report coverage.
Malaysia is one of the countries that was included in the enzymes market report that the
value projection in 2024 for 10 Billion (USD) and 6.8% of CAGR for forecast period from
2018 to 2024.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW
In Malaysia, few bio-catalyst are developed locally. A large amount of bio-catalyst for local
usage are imported. Several local companies and the existence of firmed market give chance
to the newcomers to pursue a share in the local market. In the region, Malaysia plays a big role
in supplying bio-catalysts. For example, in 2008, about 633 tonnes of bio-catalysts were
exported from Malaysia to entire of the region. Foreign players are ruling the local market of
enzymes. Finding novel bio-catalysts in Malaysia is a major opportunity. It is because of local
biological diversity provided to developers of novel enzyme. There are various of bio-catalysts
have been founded from micro-organisms in unique ecology of Malaysia.
3. CONCLUSION
Enzyme is very beneficial and has many usages to human, industries, research and many more.
Enzymes market value is estimated to increases to upcoming years due to its various
application in many fields and sectors. Malaysia is one of the countries that is no exception in
expanding of isolation, development and application of enzymes.
