Objectivity in Journalism: Poor Coverage
Objectivity in Journalism: Poor Coverage
Objectivity in Journalism: Poor Coverage
Objectivity in Journalism refers to factuality and fairness. The aim of objectivity in journalism
is to let audience make up their own mind about something by providing the citizens the
information which will be beneficial for them, from which they can make the best decisions for
themselves, their societies and for their government. The journalist should only state the facts
that are there. Journalist shouldn’t be on any side of the argument. He should provide us with
correct and truthful information rather than letting us know only the side which he wants us to
know; should provide us with both sides of story. What the people don’t like while seeing any
news is confusion. People don’t want the obscurity and complexity which is being too common
and having these days. When someone owns a news channel and knows both sides of story but
still leaves people confused, doesn’t achieve anything out of it. In much easier words, they are
supposed to be watchdogs. Like we all know how news media is playing a vital role by keeping
us informed about what is going on in our country and around the world. Meanwhile reporting
about politics, it gets a little bit complex. The journalists should not get biased in their approach
to work. Though there was a time when Pakistani journalists were not biased. They were
unbiased; used to do their work fairly.
POOR COVERAGE:-
There are many people who are at loss because of poor coverage. Like a veteran political
worker who has been loyal to PML-N his entire life carried out plenty of rallies that weren’t
given the coverage. Because of that he is at loss. This tells how biased it has become. And
unnecessary coverage to events has become a trend now. Distortion of media has become a
common practice. These are some flaws which are destroying its image.
As the time is passing by there are much technology coming but newspaper hasn’t lost its
regard. The time when people would read newspaper is still here even though it’s a bit less.
Newspaper was the only that shouldn’t be stopped reading and would never in my opinion.
There is some news which we get to know, and that doesn’t look like that the journalist is on
one side of the party.
There are some cases in which the journalists tried to hide the facts and doesn’t tell the whole
news but still it managed to come out.
This happens a lot in politics. Like, three televisions channels- Abbtak news, 24 news and Capital
TV saw their transmission abruptly suspended after covering a press conference by opposition
politician Maryam Nawaz and the authorities says that these three channels were unavailable
because of ‘technical issues’. The news channels were put of air reportedly on the orders of
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). Maryam, who is the daughter of
former Prime Minister Nawaz Shariff who was controversially removed from his position in
2017 and served a jail sentence for corruption, alleged in the press conference that she had the
evidence of the judge who jailed her father had done so under pressure. In less then a week,
Maryam Nawaz was called for an interview on Hum News, but that live interview was forcefully
stopped after a few minutes into the transmission, according to the journalist Nadeem Malik
who was conducting the interview. Not the information ministry, not the information minister,
no one could tell why the interview was taken off air after it was run. Just after the interview
was aired, Hum News tweeted, "Hum News believes in a free and responsible media. Protecting
freedom of expression is one of our core values. At the same time, we stand for the respect and
dignity of the judiciary in line with our ethical values and the Constitution." Maryam then
termed this incident as ‘unbelievable fascism’. Just after all these interviews of Maryam Nawaz,
Imran Khan’s administration vowed to block any media coverage whoever interviewed the ones
who are under trial. But some says that it was the PML-N who removed this not because of
technical issues which they claimed. Though the journalists do know some of the things but
everything is so under controlled now that it always ends up leaving us confused.
Before reporting us anything, the journalist should gather up facts from the both sides and in
my opinion, they should not give their opinion because while giving his own opinion he is
already on one side of the story, so by giving his opinion he will be mostly telling one side of the
story which he believes is right. Hence what I believe is he should keep his opinion aside and
just state both sides of the story, it is our job to think what we believe is accurate or wrong.
Aside from all of these things, the objectivity in newspapers is completely important otherwise
it can lead to some disturbing things as well. There can be a dangerous climate, unhealthy war
ratings could get high. Pakistan’s media needs a code conduct as Pakistan’s media landscape
has overly exploded over the last decade.
