CLASS 9

THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE

ASSIGNMENT 7

GIST OF THE LESSON

1. Plant cells, in addition to the plasma membrane, have another rigid outer covering called
cell wall.
2. Cell wall is composed of cellulose that provides structural strength to plants.
3. The cell wall performs many important functions in a cell;
a. Protection
b. Structure
c. Support
4. Cell wall is permeable.
5. Cellulose is a complex carbohydrate that is an important constituent of cell wall.
6. Fungal cell wall is mainly composed of chitin.
7. Bacterial cell wall is made of peptidoglycan.
8. Cell wall is permeable and when a living plant cell loses water through osmosis, there is
shrinkage of the contents of the cell away from the cell wall. This phenomenon is known as
plasmolysis.
9 .When a plant cell is placed in hypertonic medium, the protoplasm shrinks and the cell
body (or the cell content) pulls away from the cell wall due to exosmosis. Water comes out
of the vacuole and cytoplasm of the cell appears shrunken.
10. On boiling, cells get killed, permeability of membrane is lost and hence, no plasmolysis
will occur.
12. When a plant cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, endosmosis occurs and the cell
swells, building up pressure against the cell wall and the wall exerts an equal pressure
against the swollen cell.
12. Animal cells do not have cell wall, so due to endosmosis, they may swell and can then
burst (lysis), when placed in a hypotonic medium. But, this is not in case of plant cells. Cell
walls permit cells of plants, fungi and bacteria to withstand very dilute (hypotonic) external
media without bursting.
ASSIGNMENT 7
1. Which statement among the following is true about the cell wall?
a. Cell wall is metabolically active.
b. Cell wall allows lipid synthesis.
c. Cell wall prevents plant cells from bursting in a very dilute medium.
d. None of the above.
2. An onion peel cell kept in a concentrated salt solution will exhibit:
A. Endosmosis
B. Exosmosis
c. Endocytosis
d. Exocytosis
3. Bacterial cell wall is composed of _______________.
4. Cell membrane is _____________ permeable, whereas cell wall
is_________.
5. A solution which has equal solute concentration as the fluids inside the cell
is
termed _______________.
6. Name the phenomenon of shrinkage of the cell contents away from the cell
wall.
7. What is the chemical composition of the cell wall in plants and fungi?
8. What happens when Rhoeo leaves are first boiled in water and a drop of
sugar syrup is put on it? Explain.
9. State two main functions of the cell wall.
10. What would happen to RBCs placed in distilled water?
