A long, thin, pliable carpet is laid on the floor. One end of the carpet is
bent back and then pulled backwards with constant unit velocity, just
above the part of the carpet which is still at rest on the floor. The
carpet has unit length and unit mass.

Passage – 2
Centre of mass is the point where all mass of system is centred. Centre of
mass describes the translatory motion. A system consists a large number
of particles. Then without using the concept of C.M., motion of system
cannot be described because Newton’s laws hold for only point object.
Position of C.M., depend on the distribution of masses. Position of centre
of mass lies very nearer to the massive part. The centre of mass of any
symmetric object lies on an axis of symmetry and on any plane of
symmetry. If the net external force on the system of particles is zero then
centre of mass of the system moves with constant velocity or remain at
rest. Kinetic energy of the system of particles is equal to sum of K.E. of
centre of mass and K.E. of particles with respect to a frame fixed at the
centre of mass.
4. V
If CM is velocity of C.M. of system and M is the total mass of system, then
MV CM :
a) is equal to vector sum of the linear momenta of all particles of the
system.
b) Is constant, if external force act on the system.
c) MvCM represent the momentum of independent particles.
d) MvCM is not constant when only internal force act on the system
5. In a two particle system with the particles having mass m1 and m2 , if the
first particle is pushed towards the C.M., through a distance d, then the

direction in which the second particle should move, so that the position of
C.M. remains unchanged is:
a) Towards the C.M.,
b) Away from C.M.
c) Equal to d towards the C.M.
d) Away from the C.M. by equal distance d.
6. For an uniform solid hemispherical object of mass M and radius R, the
distance of its centre of mass from its centre is
R 4R R 3R
a) 2 b) 7 c) 4 d) 8

1. The mass per unit length of a rod varies as L where M 0 is a
constant and x is the distance of any point on rod measured from one end.
KL
Centre of mass of the rod from the given end is at a distance of 3 on the
rod. Find the value of K.
2. Figure shows a uniform disc of radius R from which a hole of radius R / 2
has been cut out from left of the centre and is placed on right of the centre
of disc. The centre of mass of resulting disc is at a distance R / n from centre
of uniform disc. Find the value of n.

is moved towards 3 kg by a distance 1.8 m, then by what distance the
particle 3kg be moved towards the 5 kg so that the centre of the system
does not change? ( in m)
8. Two balls of masses 1 kg each are connected by an inextensible massless
string. The system is resting on a smooth horizontal surface. An impulse
of 10 Ns is applied to one of the balls at an angle 30 0 with the line joining
two balls in horizontal direction as shown in the figure. Assuming that the

separated by 3 m.They have equal and opposite velocities of 10 m/s. The
first skater carries a long light pole, 3 m long, and the second skater grabs
the end of it as he passes (assume frictionless ice).
a) The motion of the skaters after they are connected by the pole.
b) By pulling on the pole the skaters reduce their distance to 1 m. Ratio of
K.E of system in part a to that in part b is n find n.
