Tools are very useful to us in our homes especially to our job. But tools that are no longer
functional may cause harm.

equipment they need an immediate repair or maintenance.
4. Power supply (for electrically operated only). Failure to meet the required power supply,
malfunction will occurs in the part of hand tools or equipment.

Learning Activity 8
Perform Basic Maintenance
BASIC MAINTENANCE OF ELECTRICAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
1. Clean out the dust. Make sure that tools and equipment are free from dust because it can affect the
tool life and performance of the tools especially equipment which has complicated parts. Clean out
the dust before and after every use.
2. Check the cords. Look for wear and tear on the power cords on your electric tools. There can be
damage to the insulation and you should keep an eye out for loose wires. This will ensure that your
electric tool can get the power that it needs to function without an accident. Wipe the cords down to
keep them from becoming damaged from oil and grease. The prongs on the cords should be
examined as well. Make sure that the casing is intact and the prongs are not loose.
3. Oil some electric tools. The electric tools in your toolbox that have a cutting surface should be
lightly oiled to prevent rust. Examine the cutting surface for rust to make sure that your tools are kept
in good condition.
4. Inspect your tools every time you use them. This is done to ensure your safety while using them
and also the longevity of your tools as well. If you see some problem in your tools or equipment do
not try to repair because it might cause bigger problem. Instead, put label on non-functional
tool/equipment and report them to the person who is capable to repair them.
5. Use the right tools correctly. Read the manual provided in every equipment to know how to use the
equipment correctly. Using your tools and equipment correctly can increase the life of you tools, it
can also keep you safe while using them.
6. Storing your tools. Keep your electric tools stored in their original cases and containers. This will
keep them free of dust and dirt while they are not being used.

LUBRICANT
It is a substance capable of reducing friction of a surface or two contacting objects. Lubrication is
the process of reducing friction that resist the motion of an objects. The property of reducing friction is
called lubricity.
The primary functions of lubricants are:
 Reduce friction
 Prevent wear
 Protect the equipment from corrosion
 Control temperature (dissipate heat)
 Control contamination (carry contaminants to a filter or sump)
 Transmit power (hydraulics)
 Provide a fluid seal
