CRC-EVANS SADDLE
BAG WEIGHT™ SYSTEM

The Saddle Bag is a modern way of pipline bouyancy

control, designed especially for use in wetlands and
environmentally sensitive areas. Saddle Bags are a more
effective and less expensive alternative to the traditional
concrete weight system.

The Saddle Bag is an aggregate filled geotextile fabric

which is designed to either set on or strap on to provide
negative buoyancy, depending on the project requirements.

Chemical Stability

 Polypropylene resists most alkali and acid substances and

retains its structural properties between pH of 2.0 and 12.0.

 The polymer also resists chemical breakdown in the

presence of most oils and solvents. For specific reactivity
and effect on bag lifespan consult CRC-Evans engineering.

Thermal Considerations
5 minutes max

 Polypropylene loses strength as its temperature increases.

 The material melts at 323 °F (161 °C) and will burn if exposed to
an oxidizing environment and high temperature.

 The bags may be exposed to temperatures up to 200 °F (93 °C).

It is not recommended to expose the bags to temperatures over
175 °F (80 °C) for more than 5 minutes.

 The maximum continuous operating temperature to which an

installed bag may be exposed to is 150 °F (65 °C).

 For installation in conditions where this temperature will be

exceeded on a continuous basis consult CRC-Evans engineering.

49
Weighting Systems – Saddle Bags

Sun Exposure

 The polypropylene material the weights are constructed from is

UV resistant but will still degrade in the presence of ultraviolet
light over long periods of time.

 Bags must be shipped/stored with sufficient cover to protect the

material from long-term sunlight exposure.

 Likewise, the bags should not be installed where extended

exposure to sunlight can occur.

Corrosion Considerations

 Corrosion of pipelines is a major issue as it can lead to shortened

life of the pipeline or even to catastrophic failure. The CRC-Evans
Saddle Bag weight is designed to allow free flow of water through
the fabric and thus will not create a cathodic shield. This allows
cathodic protection systems to function normally.

 The bag material itself is polypropylene, which is an inert material

and will not cause corrosion of material it comes in contact with.

 Saddle Bag weights are flexible and free of sharp edges that can
damage the corrosion protection coating on the pipes surface.
When placed on the pipe the weight of the saddle bag is
distributed across the surface.

Life Expectancy

The estimated lifespan of the polypropylene geo-textile fabric that makes up the main body of the
Saddle Bag is in excess of 100 years under normal soil conditions.

Weighting Systems – Saddle Bags

Benefits of the CRC-Evans Saddle Bag

The Saddle Bag provides many benefits as compared to the use of concrete anchor weights.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ is specifically designed for wetland applications.

It will conform to the pipe and the ditch when installed, as well as maintain tension across the top of the
pipe. The wetter the application, the better the Saddle Bag Weight™ performs.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ has no environmental impact.

The Saddle Bag Weight™ is fabricated from completely inert materials. There is no concern with leaching
of granite into the soil in environmentally sensitive areas, or disposal of leftover concrete.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ provides more negative buoyancy per pound than a concrete weight.
The average density of rock is much greater than that of concrete, so the submerged weight is higher than
the submerged weight of an equivalent concrete weight. This saves money – fewer weights for same
negative buoyancy.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ saves on ditch depth.

The Saddle Bag Weight™ does not extend above the top of the pipe, saving in ditch depth. In wetland
installations of large diameter pipe, this can represent a significant savings in excavations cost.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ allows less ditch dewatering.

It is not necessary to totally expose the pipe prior to installation.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ will not tip off of the pipe.
The Saddle Bag Weight™ has a center of gravity well below the center of the pipe and will not tip off,
regardless of the stability of the bottom of the ditch.

✔ There is no need for rock shield.

The Saddle Bag Weight™ will not damage corrosion coating or the pipe, even if the bag strikes the pipe
during installation.

✔ The Saddle Bag Weight™ is easily and quickly installed.

In wetland applications the Saddle Bag Weight™ can be more quickly installed than a concrete set-on
anchor weight due to less dewatering and less concern with bumping the pipe.

✔ Saddle Bag Weight™ can be handled, loaded out, and installed immediately after filling.

Automated Application of Multi Component Liquid (MCL)

PIH Automated Application System

In order to meet the industry’s needs, PIH field joint

services developed a fully automated machine to
apply MCL coatings to the weld joint area. The pre-
programmable, automated spray equipment allows
for a fast, consistent, high quality application of the
field joint system, to each and every weld area.

The automated, on-pipe coating machine applies

the materials by rotating around the pipe a pre-
determined number of times, evenly building up the
required thickness of material over the weld area.
Application time is often 1 minute or less, allowing
for very high production rates.

Fully Automated Spray Technology

PIH developed the Fully Automated Spray Technology,

or F.A.S.T. system, to meet the ever increasing demands
of the pipeline construction industry to improve
productivity, reliability, safety and quality assurance.

The F.A.S.T system has improved features for the

monitoring of material parameters, along with automatic
(real-time) checking of the pumping equipment to
ensure the material is being applied at the correct
conditions and in the correct mix-ratio, at all times.

With the advent of the online monitoring system, clients

can be assured that material is always ‘on ratio’ and that
all critical parameters are continuously monitored,
without the need for human intervention. A ‘fail-safe’
alarm shuts down the system if any irregularities occur.
Real time data logging of all relevant parameters
ensures complete accountability.

The result is a fully automated, pre-programmable spray

system which significantly reduces the risk of human
error, ensuring repeatable quality and the long term
integrity of the coated field joint area.
