The firm of Johnston & Hoffman opened in Calcutta in 1883, its employees being, for

the most part, disgruntled members of Bourne & Shepherd.Whereas Bourne & Shepherd
specialised in views of the Himalayas, Johnston & Hoffman concentrated on views of
the teak and jute industries, not to mention a carefully composed series of
photographs of Indian monuments. The firm's catalogue at one time listed over a
thousand such photographs and many of them are still used as standard illustrations
of Indian architecture by the 'Encyclopaedia Britannica'. Another interesting
