Insider On Theatrekaran: Chennai's Passionate Broadway
Theatrekaran is a Tamil theatre group formed way back in 2016 by a cheerful trio of boys —
Sabarivas, Raghavendr and Sriram Jeevan — who had nothing but love and passion towards it.
Theatrekaran serves as a place for young emerging artists to gain more experience, craft their
skill, and build their theatrical resumes. This place is not only for those who wish for
professional careers in theatre within the future but also for those who share a deep passion
for the art and strive to master their abilities to the best. They act as a doorway from amateur
theatre to professional theatre.
Besides, Theatrekaran strives to promote education in and through theatre. They come from a
school of thought where the "process" of creating theatre and learning along the way is equal
to the "product." Furthermore, Theatrekaran supports each other professionally, artistically,
and fraternally. Their larger goal is to give their audience quality productions.
Over the past few years, Theatrekaran has had multiple productions under its name that
showcased the tremendous and varied talent based in South India. They give artists stages,
screens, galleries, spaces, training and the connections needed to share their work. They bring
arts education to students of all ages, teachers, parents and community members.
One of the massive hits of Theatrekaran’s production is “Asuras” – a highly contemporary play
which was a fine instance of bold appropriation of both Hindu and Indian mythology. Apart
from the well-chosen plot and structure, the most distinguishing factor of the play was the
dominance of the devotion held by its actors towards it. The potentiality of the genre was fully
utilized by every actor, be it a major or minor role, and gave full justice infusing both the
mythical character and the significant script. Not to reveal the essence of the script, but Asuras
sure did touch the audience and strangely hit their heart as they knew Ravana did deserve his
death, yet they couldn’t stop empathizing for him.
Following the grand success of Asuras, Theatrekaran took a different turn by giving us the
pleasure of witnessing one of the best forms of theatre arts – storytelling. “Kadhaigal
Kaanalam” – is Theatrekaran’s unique, inventive style that incorporates physical theatre,
spoken word and storytelling. This 90-minute session introduces the actor’s approach to telling
stories creatively, exploring new imaginative vocabulary to make storytime fun, exciting and
stimulating for all. The audience can strap-on and join as the storytellers take them through
different genres of illustration.
With each production they’ve taught us about the history of performance, the art of acting and
directing, and the impact that theatre has on the world. Throughout the years, they have
performed several plays ranging from mythology, history, love and social cause.
Theatrekaran as a whole, mainly believe that empowering people’s voices in the social change
movement is the key to balanced reforms and sustainable change; and to bring this change is
primal of the event. The recent success, “Nattuku Naalu Seidi” – is a set of 4 improvisational
and scripted plays that hold the power to disrupt mundane routines, forcing people to confront
issues around the loss of civility. The primary purpose of the event, and the street-play format
as a whole, is to raise awareness on social issues and is one of the most compelling forms of
grassroots activism. Theatrekaran believes that every audience will go back home and hopefully
ponder on the steps they could take to henceforth live in peace and justice, as a society.
This following year, Theatrekaran has promised its audience with multiple productions in
partnership with Chennai’s best of artists and arts groups, big and small, just starting and
established, of every discipline and in every neighbourhood. The audience is requested to take
a look around T Nagar for they might just discover the next big thing.
In conclusion, Theatrekaran focus on productions that foster a deep actor-audience relationship
and will help the audience travel through both well-known and more unique plays and their
meaning. Most of all, the Theatrekaran group is a family, says everyone who is a part of it.
