The film is about the people of a small village in Victorian India who staked their

future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers. The plot is

inspirational as its characters overcome overwhelming odds to save their province.
The year is 1893 and India is under British occupation. In a small village, the tyrannical
Captain Russell has imposed an unprecedented land tax on its citizens. Outraged,
Bhuvan, a rebellious farmer, rallies the villagers to publicly oppose the tax. Russell
offers a novel way to settle the dispute: he challenges Bhuvan and his men to a game of
cricket, a sport completely foreign to India. If Bhuvan and his men can defeat Russell's
team, the tax will be repealed.
The film contains a good amount of musical numbers which serve its purpose of
moving the plot while also adding a sense of drama to the scenes. The musical
numbers never take away any momentum the plot has even during its most serious
moments. As a whole, it contains a nice balance of comedy, drama, and romance
story. The film also accomplished the impossible task of making Cricket feel intense,
exciting, and most importantly watchable for a long duration. Aamir Khan (Bhuvan)
makes an excellent leading man in this musical of epic proportion. He is completely
dedicated to his role that you'll be convinced all the way through with who he
portrays. He says his lines with such passion and emotion making his every speech
powerful. Gracy Singh is a lovely actress who can hold her own weight and dances
gracefully in the musical numbers. The rest of the cast members not only make
strong actors, but they also make excellent singers and dancers. The
cinematography gives you a sense of scope and pulls you into its atmosphere.
Whether it showcase its beautiful landscape or nicely choreographed musical
numbers will have your eyes thrilled. The musical score is terrific all the way through,
especially during the Cricket which helps add tension to an already tense climax.
"Lagaan" somehow succeeds in being suspenseful at the same time it's frivolous and
obvious. The final cricket match is in the time-honored tradition of all sports movies, and
yet the underlying issues are serious. And there is the intriguing question of whether the
Bhuvan will end up with his childhood sweetheart, or cross color lines with the Victorian
woman.
The film is filled with engaging characters, a great inspirational plot that balances
many different elements, and imagery that's just stunning all the way through.
