BASIC GUIDE:

How to define a pattern in Photoshop

STEP 1
Open up your image you would like to use
as a pattern.
In this instance, I’m using one of my master tile hand drawn
texture patterns as an example.

STEP 2 original master tile

Use the Rectangle Marquee tool to

select an area to use as a pattern.
Feather must be set to 0 pixels. Note that large images may
become unwieldy, and in older versions of Photoshop, there
is a limit to the pixel size you can define as a pattern. You can
select any shape, but for this example, I’m selecting the entire
tile for a seamless pattern.

STEP 3
Choose Edit > Define Pattern.
Enter a name for the pattern in the Pattern Name dialogue box.

STEP 4
Use your new pattern
To use your new pattern, open or create a new document to
your desired size. Choose Select > All. Then Edit > Fill…
In the dialogue box under Contents, choose Pattern. Under
options, selection your new pattern, then press OK. You should
now have a background with a repeat of your pattern!
you can fill any shape
