Hillsborough Schools Canvas Pre-Publishing Checklist

Before publishing your course(s) for students, it’s best practice to complete the following tasks.

1. Cross-List Your Canvas Course Sections (THIS IS OPTIONAL)

Determine your preferred structure of Canvas course sections and set up your course(s) accordingly. Please do this before
copying any content into your SIS created course(s). Learn more about cross-listing by copying and pasting this link into
Google Chrome: https://bit.ly/hcpscrosslist

2. Create/edit assignment groups in Canvas.

3. Publish individual items and module headers, as needed.

Students can only access published content within your course. If items are shown in green with a green
checkmark, they are published. If they have a gray no symbol, they are unpublished. Module titles must also be
published for students to view the content within them.

4. Explore course settings and edit to meet your

needs.
It’s helpful to confirm course settings before publishing.
1. Click Settings.
2. Select Course Details tab.
3. Scroll to the bottom and select More Options.
4. Enable or disable the optional settings. (Pay close attention to those
related to discussions!
5. Click Update.

5. Streamline navigation.
Less is more! Displaying fewer items in your course navigation will make it easier for students to find and access your content.
Recommended items to include in the course navigation include: Home, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Modules,
Quizzes, and Grades. Additionally, you may want to consider including any LTI tools (Edgenuity, iReady, Achieve3000, etc)
students will use in the course. Learn to customize your course navigation.

6. View the course in Student View.

Go through your course in student view to see it exactly as your students will see it!
By doing this, you will be aware of any items that may still need to be published and understand the exact steps your students
will take to access content or submit work. (Note: Student View does not preview external LTI tools such as Edgenuity, iReady,
Achieve3000 etc.) Also, check to make sure all homepage buttons linked to course content are opening properly.

7. Publish the course!

On the course home page, click the Publish button!
Once the course is published, students will be able to view and participate.
