3rd TERMINOLOGIES IN ART

Quarter III: Media-based Arts and Design in the Philippines


1. Photography- new means to express themselves, to explore colors and lights and to change
the way they produce and look at images.
 Was viewed as a purely technical process that of recording visible images by light action
on light sensitive materials
2. Self-Expression- expresses feelings and manipulates reality to create, subjective mood &
atmosphere.
3. Documentation- it can capture our favorite memory or document our traditions.
4. Communication-it can speak to, or elicit an emotion, from its viewers, like sounds, words,
and symbols, we can communicate what we think and feel through a picture.
5. Advertising photography (food)- If a culinary magazine or restaurant wants food to look
delicious and fun to eat a food photographer is what it needs.
6. Fashion photography- takes photograph of models aimed at showcasing clothes or other
types of accessories.
7. Travel photography-as an exciting way to live life, as travel became easier and digital
cameras became compact and costing less than they used to.
 Has become attractive to pursue for those interested image taken from all over the
world are sent via mobile phones e mail, and blogs on the web every day.
8. Photo Journalism- many pictures of photo journalists are dramatic if not distressful.
 Is a picture documenting the loss of lives destruction of homes & properties and the
ensuing chaos and grief of survivor caused by the super typhoon Lando?
9. George Tapan- is an award-winning travel photographer who has won two pacific Asia
Tourism Association. Gold Awards- an ASEAN Tourism Association Award.
 First place in the 2011 National Geography Photo contest.
10. John K. Kua- is best known as an advertising and commercial photographer with over 40
years of experience in this field & numerous local and international awards for his work.
 He has applied his photo artistry to show casing the beauty of the Phil.
11. Film/Cinema-are serious cinema & are definitive of the direction & quality of Filipino films.
12. Filipino filmmaker-defined the distance between mainstream cinema & what is now known
as alternatives or independent (Indie) cinema.
13. Filmmaking- because of technical complexity, involves entire teams of artists, writer &
production experts, supported by technicians taking charge of the cameras, lighting
equipment, sets, pops costumes & the like all under the supervision of a film director.
14. Film directing-works with ideas, images, sounds and other effects to create this unique
piece of art.
15. Acting-first & foremost there was the art of acting for film.
16. Cinematography- behind the scenes, there was cinematography or the art of film camera
work.
17. Editing-the art of selecting the precise sections of film, then sequencing & joining them to
achieve the directors deserved visual and emotional effect.
18. Production/ Set Design-this recreated in Physical terms-through location, scenery, sets,
lighting costumes & props – the mental image that the director had of how each scenes,
should look what period it should depict , and what atmosphere it should convey.
19. Film Genres-the public response to motion picture was immediate and enthusiastic.

* Her more recent film such as Tanging Yaman 2001 which won Best Picture in the Metro
Manila Film Festival American Adobo 2002 , all gained her recognition among the current
generation of Filipino moviegoers.
23. Marilou Diaz Abaya-captured the attention and respect of the viewing public with powerful
film such as Jose Rizal 1998 perfectly timed for the centennial celebration of the Phil.
Independence, Muro-Ami 1999, which bravely exposed the deadly practice of using child-divers
to pound for fish in the phil., coral reefs, & Bagong Buwan 2001 which dealt with the human
cost of Muslim-Christian Conflict in Mindanao.

J. Delos Reyes-crossing over easily between projects for television and for the big screen. The
heart warning drama film Magnifico won for him the best director distinction at the 2003.
Fames Awards & garnered other and international film awards as well Delos Reyes continued
to be active in both film and television media, having become known for well-loved teleseryes.
25. Another film director who has brought the country to the cinema world’s attention in
Brillante Mendoza. * He was originally a production designer for films, commercials and music
videos and started directing films in 2005. But in just four years his film Kinatay (The Execution
of U.P. Won for him the best Director award at the highly prestigious Canneds films festival of
2009.
26. Animation-Filipino Animators have been involved in the creation of some of the best love
and technically challenging –animated feature film produced in the last few years. The
Animation Council of the Philippines (ACCP) is a non-stock, non-profit organization that aims to
create an identify, for the Phil’s, within the animation industry, making it one of the preferred
sources for animation services worldwide.
27. The Phil. Animation studio Inc. (PASI) was established in 1991 and has since collaborated on
numerous animation projects and series with foreign partners.
28. Print Media-a long side the digital media forms discussed above there remains the more
conventional form known is print media.
29. One major field that still relies heavily in print media is advertising.
30. Another field of print media that highlights the artistic gift of Filipinos is that of comic books or
comics as they are preferred to locally.
31. Digital Media – all the artistic skills and techniques that go into producing books like those just

well as fashion from haute couture to bridal ensembles to casual wear.
33. Kenneth Cobonpue- is a multi-awarded designer and the creative director of HIVE, a design
& manufacturing facility for designers of interior accessories & lighting.
34. Monique Lhullier- hailing from Cebu City, Filipina Fashion designer first rose to prominence
for her exquisite weeding gowns.
35. Jose Natori- born Josephina Almeda Cruz in Manila, this Filipino American fashion designer
began her career as an investment banker, before she made the dramatic shift to creating her
own lines of lingerie, resort & lounge wear, as well as semi-formal and casual attire. 36. Rajo
Laurel-is a much- admired Filipino fashion designer with a number of national and international awards
to his name. He trained at New York’s fashion Institute of Technology and at the central Saint Martin’s in
London.

37. Lulu Tan Gan-known for her fashionable knitwear lines since 1985. She had been dubled
“The Queen of Knitwear in the country.
38. Dita Sandico Ong- she has been advocating the use of local weaving technique and natural fibers.
-- known as the “Wrap Artiste of the Phil’s. For her famous bold-colored wraps.
---She first experimented with the local weave of I locos Sur, known as Inabel, as well as with
pineapple fibers blended with Irish Line, dubbed penalino.
39. Auraeus Solito- awards selected at the prestigious Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Section, Cannens Film
Festival, and France.
40. Salundong- winner, best Regional Entry in Animahenasyon 2010 Philippine Animation Festival.

41.Mutya- grand prize, animahenasyon 2009 manila, Philippines, gold prize,12 th TBS Digicom
Philippines, Finalist, Professional Shorts, SICAF 2011, Seoul Korea, included in Petit Animac 2012,
Catalonia Spain.
42. Dayo, Sa Mundo ng Elementalya- pinoy animation; 2D/3D Animated Film. One of the first locally
produced 3D animated film in the Philippines, released December 2008.
43.Andong Agimat- a 4 minute animated film 2011 featuring Arnold Arres’s Andong Agimat going up
against pickpocket.
44-Pasintabi- by Jeff Capili, Animahenasyon 2010. Best animation Winner is an animasyon film that tells
the story of Reb, a ten year old boy who lives with his Lolo in Albay. Reb’s lolo , an albularyo, is fond of
telling tales of magic and mystery. Reb’s find his lolo’s stories interesting but passes them off as fiction
until he finds himself in the middle of what he assumed to be an imaginary world.
45. Comic Book in the Philippines began with the publication of the local komiks in 1920’s. They started
as weekly strips in local magazines like Liwayway and Bulaklak and became widely read after being
translated into different regional dialects.
46. The Script Writer/ Story Teller- most comic book today that are not done by an individual writer are
done in full script style. The writer describes the action in each and every panel and at the same time,
writes the captions, dialogue and sound effects. It is important that the writer is good at storytelling. The
writers tells stories he or she knows about, such as stories about family, friends, home or work where
humorous possibilities are infinite.
47. Pencil/Layout Renderer- the next step after the story or plot is to sketch and draw the layout on the
table. This is the job of a pencil renderer, a pencil renderer uses a pencil to draw the panels that go with
the plot, soft light pencils and smooth paper are used, as they are easier to keep clean and erase.
48. Ink Renderer-the final art is the inked pages. The artist who takes the penciled pages and takes them
to final form is the job of the ink renderer. Brush or pen, thick brush lines against thin pen lines, and
textures make up the materials and elements used by the ink renderer.
49. Colorist- to make the artwork attractive and dramatic. Help the art set the mood or tone.
50. Letter Renderer- the last big step of producing a comic book is lettering the actual pages. It is the job
of the letter renderer to compose all the elements-words, captions, titles, sound effects, talk balloons-
within the boarder of each panel of the comic book.
