State of Health Estimation For An EV Battery
Abstract:
In order to estimate the state of health (SOH) of single cell in the electric vehicle power
battery pack, this paper researched on the properties of battery's polarization resistance and
ohmic resistance, and then a relative state of health evaluation method which is based on the
ohmic resistance was proposed. This method can avoid absolute interference on the battery
performance from external such as temperature, working currents and so on, so that it can
make the SOH evaluation process more simple, and get the higher accuracy of the evaluation
results. Based on the second order RC equivalent circuit model, the dual extended Kalman
filtering (DEKF) algorithm was used to estimate the state of charge (SOC) and ohmic
resistance online, then according to the relative state of health evaluation method to realize
estimate the SOH of each cells in the battery pack online. Finally, the lithium iron phosphate
(LiFePO4) battery pack had been tested under different working conditions, the results
verified that the proposed method has high accuracy and effectiveness.
INTRODUCTION
Under the current technology level of power battery, for satisfy the power demand, electric
vehicles must use dozens or even hundreds of monomer cell [1-2]. During the working
process of the battery pack, owing to the inconsistency of each monomer cell, will lead to
expand the inconsistency of each cell and accelerate the aging process of battery pack [3-4].
Therefore, in order to maintenance or replacement the aging cells in time, Evaluate the SOH
of each cell accurately in battery pack is indispensable, which has an essential significance
for prolonging the service life of the battery and guarantee the safe operation of power battery
Compared to the research on the battery state of charge (SOC), studies on the battery SOH is
slower at present. The research model on the SOH of the battery is mainly divided into
electrochemical model [5-7], empirical model [8-10] and equivalent circuit model [11-14].
Literature [6] from the aspect of the electrochemical reaction, connect the capacity of
attenuation with active lithium ion loss in the process of circulation use of the battery, put
forward the general recession model, but the model equation is very complex and need large
amount of calculation. literature[9] Put forward the experience model according to
relationship between battery capacity fading and the temperature. literature[10] go through a
large number of experiments and data analysis on battery, obtained the model of the capacity
recession based on factors of time, SOC, temperature and so on. The models above depend on
a large number of experimental data with the shortcomings such as calculation complexity,
long time cycle and so on. Equivalent Circuit model has become the mainstream in the
project of battery research direction as its advantages of simple, intuitive and easy to embed
the battery management system. Literature[11] establish a second order equivalent circuit,
using the least square method to track the battery internal resistance, and consider
temperature effect, internal resistance change with battery aging is carried out, but the
specific relationship between the battery internal resistance and SOH is not confirm.
Literature[12] consider the influence of battery capacity decline and temperature, set up the
equivalent circuit simulation model which is dynamic adaptive battery of external
characteristic. Literature[13] [14] establishes the circuit model, uses the Kalman filter
algorithm to estimate the battery SOC and SOH, SOC estimation accuracy control within 1%,
but for SOH estimation precision is not enough, maximum error of 20%. Thus can see, the
current of battery SOH evaluation are mostly qualitative analysis, quantitative evaluation of
the accuracy is not high. This paper studies the relationship between the battery internal
resistance and battery aging, then evaluate the battery SOH through the ohmic resistance is
proposed. The method relative state of health based on the ohmic resistance is proposed to
evaluate the SOH of each single cell in the battery pack. The battery SOC and its ohmic
resistance online estimation is accomplished through Dual Extended Kalman Filtering
(DEKF), and then the battery SOH online estimation can be realized according to the relative
state of health.
PROPOSED SYSTEM
Battery Resistance. Accelerated life test is done on the cells at first. This test is repeated until
the battery capacity decrease to 80% of the rated capacity. The test result is shown in Figure 1
(a). The figure shows that the ohmic resistance increases linearly as the battery capacity
fading. This provides the basis for the subsequent resistance evaluation method.
Relative State of Health The template is used to format your paper and style the text. All
margins, column widths, line spaces, and text fonts are prescribed; please do not alter them.
You may note peculiarities. For example, the head margin in this template measures
proportionately more than is customary. This measurement and others are deliberate, using
specifications that anticipate your paper as one part of the entire proceedings, and not as an
independent document. Please do not revise any of the current designations.
CONCLUSIONS
This project proposes a relative state of health evaluation method based on ohmic resistance.
The tests under different experimental conditions proved that this evaluation method is
suitable for evaluating each single cell SOH in the battery pack. DEKF is used to estimate the
battery SOC and ohmic resistance online which provides a theoretical basis for the battery
SOH online estimation. The experimental results verify the accuracy of the online estimation.
