Dear Committee,

Art has always been a major part of my life. My mum pushed me to explore my
creativity and to take advantage of the artistic opportunities in Montreal. My first
involvement with Montreal’s vibrant art world, was working as an artist assistant. I had
the opportunity to work under and learn from artists, such as Mark Jenkins and
Michael Mapes. These are some examples of the many experiences I’ve had along my
journey of becoming a designer.
Although art has always been around me, when I applied to Cegep I was still
unsure of what I wanted to pursue. The uncertainty continued until my first design
class. One of the most defining moments of my life is when I met my design professor
at Vanier College, Thomas Fisher. He taught me to be receptive to others and to
criticism. He also encouraged me to think critically of my work, my surroundings and
myself. Throughout my experiences in Thomas Fisher’s design courses, I became
comfortable with the Adobe Suite software (i.e. Illustrator, Photoshop, Dimension,
InDesign). As I completed my assignments, I could feel myself vastly improving from
one project to the next. Foreign concepts at the beginning of my studies have now
become some of my strengths as a designer. In my first project, making and printing a
CD cover, I learned the importance of visual balance and the challenge of margins. In
my second project, creating a page layout, I became proficient at manipulating text
using kerning and leading. In my third project, which was to design an infographic, I
excelled at breaking down information to create easily consumable work.
As an aspiring Concordia Design student, I look forward to taking my skills and
what I've learnt to their next technical and conceptual levels. I know that I could
benefit immensely from the department’s expertise and the resources offered at
Concordia. The program will provide me with exposure to different elements of
design to explore on a deeper level, for example, exhibition design and installations,
and textile design. These topics will be completely new to me, and only further excite
me about potentially being a part of this exceptional program. Its multifaceted
curriculum provides a wide range of classes and resources from introductory web
design to metal and wood workshops. These academic opportunities will allow me to
take conceptual ideas to their next level of production. The comprehensive nature of
the Design program will allow me to become a multi-dimensional designer.
The opportunities that come with being a Concordia design student are
endless. The program will guide me to excel in design. It provides a space to
exchange with peers and mentors alike in Montreal’s extremely stimulating and
creative environment. Our society and social environment are constantly changing for
the better, though there are grave challenges still ahead. I hope to be accepted into
the Design program at Concordia, so that I can be part of the positive change with my
designs.

Yours sincerely,

Posie Louisa Small-MacLeod
