5.0 FIRE PROOFING INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

5.1 Surface Preparation

5.1.1 Prior to application of Fireproofing and its reinforcements, the contact

surface must be free from all oil, grease, condensation and

contamination. Protective coating should be applied, prior to

installation of the Fireproofing. Any defect coating, such as loose or

peeling paint, must be repaired before being covered by Fireproofing.

5.1.2 Protective coating on steel structure, skirts and other required areas

for fireproofing application shall refer to Contractor’s Protective

Coating Specification ref: WS1-0000-CRR-SPC-BEC-000-00102-000.

5.2 Material Mixing

5.2.1 The Fireproofing mixing work shall adhere accordingly to the

recommended mixing medium, condition, timing and other factors

provided in Vendor instruction.

5.2.2 A wet density check is to be done for every batch of cem entitious

material mixing to ensure correct dry density of 74-80 lbs/ft³ or 1.1-1.2

g/cm³. The test instruction is mentioned in Carboline Pyrocrete 241

application instructions.

5.2.3 A mock up test is to be done by fireproofing a one meter column by a

qualified nozzleman as required in the Contractor’s

Proprietary

Cementitious Fireproofing Specification ref:

WS1-0000-FGS-SPC-

BEC-000-00102-000. The mock up test sample shall be inspected and

tested as follows:

a) Conformity to design sketches.

b) Wet thickness check shall conform to ASTM E 605.

c) Visual inspection to ensure no existence of honeycomb, hollow

void, cracks or other flaws being observed.

5.3 Reinforcem ent

5.3.1 The material selection for fireproofing reinforcement shall be adhered

to Contractor’s Proprietary Cem entitious Fireproof ing S pecif ication ref :

W S 1-0000-FG S -S PC -B EC -000-00102-000r00B under 4.2

R einf orcem ent or recommended by the Vendor.

5.3.2 The design of the reinforcements shall also adhere to Contra ctor’s

Proprietary C em entitious Fireproof ing S pecif ication ref: W S 1-0000-

FG S -S PC -B EC -000-00102-000r00B under 4.2 R einf orcem ent or

recommended by the Vendor.

5.4 Application

5.4.1 A minimum thickness of 32 mm of Carboline Pyrocrete 241 is to be

achieved by application method of forming or spraying (shotcrete).

Smoothing and finishing method shall be done by using wood float

and trowel.

5.4.2 The application condition shall be between 12.7°C (55°F) and

37.7°C (100°F) with maximum relative humidity of 95%.

5.4.3 The application area and termination of fireproofing as shall follow suit

as per design and Contractor’s Standard Drawing ref: WS1-0000-

STR-DTL-BEC-000-00124-000.

5.4.4
The film builds of 32 mm thickness to follow Carboline’s

recommendation with consideration of application method, timing,

overhead areas and conditions.

5.4.5 Wet thickness check is to be conducted as per ASTM E 605 to ensure

correct thickness is achieved.

5.4.6 Visual inspection on the surface of fireproofing is to be done to ensure

there are no defects such as honey combing, hollow void and other

superficial defects.

5.5 Finishing

5.5.1 Sharp edges of the fireproofing finishing shall be chamfered.

5.5.2 Smoothing and finishing work shall be done by using wood float and

trowel within 1 – 2 hours after the final application.

5.6 Curing

The surface of the freshly applied fireproofing is to be kept damp for at least

12 hours by applying water mist or wrapped with plastic to reduce rapid water

loss. At the same time, it must be protected from rain or running water for 24

hours.

5.7 Top Coat

Requirement of the top coat application on Pyrocrete 241 is as per design if it

is mentioned. A surface hardness test is to be conducted before application of

top coat by using a durometer with minimum value of Shore D 40. The

minimum drying time is 10 days at min 21°C.

5.8 Caulking

Termination of Pyrocrete with steel surface (substrate) shall be done applying

Dow Croming 795 or approved equivalent. The exposed edges shall be

sealed with caulk, mastic, or flashing to prevent seepage of water.
