Introduction to Transport Phenomena

6 February 2021

Molecular Transport Processes

 Concern with the transfer of a given entity or property by molecular movement through a
system or medium (fluid or solid)
 Entity/Property: Heat (Thermal Energy), Mass, Momentum

Transport Phenomena
 “Things only move when they are forced to move”
- Heat Transfer
- Mass Transfer Driving Force
- Momentum Transfer

General Molecular Transport Equation

- Governs all heat, mass, and momentum transfer

driving force
rate of transfer process=
resistance

Ψ =−δ
dx

Ψ (flux) = amount of property/time x area = rate/area = mass transfer = kg/sm^2

(delta) = diffusivity/phenomenological constant
(gamma) = concentration
(x) -= direction of transfer
Dt/dx = gradient

Flux happens when there is a difference between gamma 1 and gamma 2

Steady State – no net change
Gamma 1 and 2 – constant; flux = constant

Flux at Steady State:

GMTE Equations for Heat, Mass, and Momentum Transfer

Driving Force:
Heat – Temperature
Mass – Concentration in Species
Momentum – Viscosity

Introduction to Transport Phenomena – Heat Transfer

If K/a is high, conducts heat very well; faster to attain temperature profile
Smaller K/a – harder to attain linear temperature profile
Mass Transfer
Momentum Transfer

Momentum – measure of activity of a particle (p = mv)
