Module Unit 1-3 (Form 3)

Trees play an important role in providing oxygen, storing carbon dioxide, and removing pollutants from the atmosphere. However, deforestation to make way for agriculture, industry, and urban development has cut down and destroyed many forests around the world. When deforestation occurs, dangerous greenhouse gases like carbon and methane are released into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Therefore, it is important for people to help save trees by recycling paper, reusing paper, using cloth napkins instead of paper ones, borrowing or swapping books instead of buying new ones, donating unused books, and planting trees.

UNIT 1 – FAMILY TIES

A. READING

Read. Then, answer the questions below.

My family and I visited my grandparents during the school holidays last year. They lived in a small
fishing village in Kuala Terengganu. We departed from Damansara early in the morning. Throughout
the journey, my sister and I were in a restless mood. We were eager to meet our grandparents so we
asked Father if he could drive a little faster. He just took one look at our faces and started laughing.

When we finally arrived at my grandparents’ house, my sister and I rushed out of the car and
called out to them. They were in the kitchen, preparing food for us. My grandmother was busy frying
keropok lekor and curry puffs while my grandfather was breaking open coconuts to serve us fresh
coconut water. The smell of the keropok lekor made our mouths water instantly! We then enjoyed
the snacks together while catching up on each other’s news.

Later that evening, Grandfather took my sister and I to the beach nearby. We could see
many fishing boats docked at the pier. There were also some fishermen who were mending their
nets. Grandfather introduced us to them and they were really happy to meet us. Soon, the sun
began to sink below the horizon. As we admired the beautiful sight, we let the gentle breeze cool
our faces.

UNIT 2 – FOOD, FOOD, FOOD!
A. READING

Read. Then answer the questions below. Choose no more than five words from the text for each
answer.

Nasi lemak is the pride of Malaysian cuisine. It started off as a humble home-made breakfast, eaten
by farmers before they went to work.

Nowadays, it is easy to find stalls selling nasi lemak as it is proven to be a lucrative business.
Many hawkers choose to set up their stalls by the roadside so that they are within easy reach of
housing areas and offices. They usually sell nasi lemak served with boiled eggs, slices of cucumber,
some nuts and sambal made of anchovies. They also sell chicken or beef rendang, prawn sambal,
fried chicken and so much more. In other words, there is always something special to cater to each
person’s individual taste.

However, is nasi lemak a truly Malaysian dish? According to heritage historian Ahmad Najib
‘Nadge’ Ariffin, nasi lemak was first made in a small Malay society in the South-East Asian region,
though there seems to be no definite proof. Regardless of where the dish may have come from,
there is not denying the tantalising taste of the dish itself.

Nasi lemak is normally wrapped in banana leaves. The rice is sweet and savoury as each
grain is filled with the richness of coconut milk. Pandan leaves are also added to the rice while it is
being cooked. They add a little more flavour to the rice and make it smell heavenly. The spiciness of
the sambal will leave your mouth watering and yearning for more.

Trees serve a useful purpose for us on this planet. They give out oxygen, store carbon dioxide as well
as remove other pollutants from the atmosphere. Thus, we can all live in a safe and clean
environment. Besides that, trees are very necessary for water storage, managing our climate, to get
medicine and as the main source of wood.

However, in the present, many parts of the forest around the world have already been cut
and destroyed to make way for agricultural, industrial and urban development. When deforestation
happens, dangerous gases such as carbon and methane and released into the atmosphere. These
gases contribute to the greenhouse effect, which ultimately lead to global warming.

Therefore, it is important for us to play our part in helping to save the trees whenever we
can. Instead of cutting down trees to make paper, we should make it a habit of recycling paper as
much as possible. Have a spot in your home for paper that is blank on one side. Reuse the paper
before you recycle it. Also, use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.

Another way to save the trees is by borrowing of swapping books with your friends. If you
have books you no longer read, do not throw them away. Instead, donate them to a second-hand
bookshop, library or reading programme. Furthermore, if you have a garden, try planting a tree. You
can also encourage the people in your neighbourhood to plant trees in their garden. Also, when
shopping, opt for recycled products.
