 SCHOOL HISTORY

Handley High School

This is a 1946 photo of Handley High School. Handley High School closed in 1959 and became
Handley Middle School. It was part of Handley Independent School District and was taken over by
FWISD in 1929.

 Under Construction

In 1959 Handley High School was closed to relieve the crowded conditions at Handley and
Poly High Schools. The first year Eastern Hills had 600 students who chose the traditions
that would become a part of Eastern Hills. The name Highlander was chosen by a secret
ballot as were the school colors, blue, gray, and white. The first principal of Eastern Hills
was Roy C. Johnson who served the district until he retired in 1975.

New School Opens

 September, 1959-1960 school year opened the new school with 600 students. Traditions were
started and are still a part of Eastern Hills today. IN a school election the colors of Blue, Grey and
White were chosen along the winning mascot of Highlander.

The Jerry Sadler Field House, dedicated in the fall 1979; it stands as symbol of excellence and was
named after our winning nest coach at the time. He directed the Highlanders to more winning
seasons than any other coach and had 60% winning percentage when he retired. (Source Ft.

HOME STADIUM

SCARBOROUGH-HANDLEY STADIUM

Handley Stadium was named in honor of Principal Scarborough of Handley High School. It is a
5,000 seat stadium, it was built when the old Handley High School was closed and could no longer
accommodate the large crowds from the Handley Neighborhood to see the games of Eastern Hills
High School. The stadium has the feel of a True Home Field Advantage. It’s the official home of the
Eastern Hills Highlanders.

 TRADITIONS
Clans/Classes

In the beginning there were only three classifications at Eastern Hills High School--sophomore,
junior and senior--and there are three classifications in the clan system of Scottish ancestry.

The chief of the clan (class president) led his followers in times of peace and war. The class
president presided over meetings. Class officers are chosen each year by nominations from
each class.

The Toiseach holds the next highest honor (vice-president) and he presided over the clan during
the absence of the chief.

The class treasurer corresponds to the Tanist of the clans. He is nominated by the members of
the class and holds the clan lands in trust for the members.
Clan laws are founded in Celtic law. Class meetings are conducted on a democratic level, and
every class member has a chance to vote.

 Clubs

Clubs often result from social customs and sometimes customs come from clubs. One custom
was to send a child of one family to be reared in another family. This was done to bind the clans
together. The Tartan is another binding symbol. The Tartan plaid represented the family by
which it is claimed. The Tartan was chosen for the name of the school newspaper.

Organizations at Eastern Hills, like the clans of Scotland, provide many benefits to everyone. The
French and Spanish clubs give students a better understanding of other countries and their
people by teaching the customs of those countries. Clubs and organizations give students a
chance to display their skills in different fields: band, chess, and journalism, art, and music,
military and academic fields.

The Grey Dragoons of Scotland have been known for their fighting spirit, and so were the
Highlandernettes (the Pep Club, and the forerunner of the Lassie Dance Team) at the footballs
games and other sporting events. Clubs and their customs help to bind the Eastern Hills Clan.
