unders tanding of, and commitment to, the breadth and intens ity of training which is required in a veterinary
program.

B ac helor of S c ienc e (Veterinary B ios c ienc e)

s ubmitting an applic ation for the B ac helor of S c ienc e (Veterinary B ios c ienc e), you are
ag reeing to the requirements below.
T he Aus tralian V eterinary B oard C ouncil Inc (AV B C ) is the Aus tralian body res pons ible for accrediting veterinary s cience
programs . At the Univers ity of Adelaide, the veterinary s cience program compris es of two degrees : the B achelor of
S cience (V eterinary B ios cience) and the D octor of V eterinary Medicine. T o practice as a veterinarian, s tudents need to
complete both degrees (6 years in total). G raduates from approved veterinary programs are eligible for regis tration as
veterinarians in all s tates and territories of Aus tralia, New Z ealand and the United K ingdom. In order to meet thes e
profes s ional expectations , graduates mus t be able to demons trate their ability to perform various animal handling,
manipulative, therapeutic and diagnos tic techniques . T he V eterinary S urgeons B oard or V eterinary P ractitioners B oard in
any s tate or territory of Aus tralia may refus e to regis ter a pers on not deemed fit to practis e veterinary s cience by reas on
of infirmity, injury, mental or phys ical illnes s , habitual drunkennes s or addiction to a deleterious drug. In order to meet
and maintain accreditation s tandards with the AV B C , the Univers ity of Adelaide is required to train graduate s tudents
who are eligible to be regis tered as veterinarians .
T he B achelor of S cience (V eterinary B ios cience) and the D octor of V eterinary Medicine together form a broad program; it
is a requirement of the accreditation of the program that graduates have the s kills to practice veterinary medicine and
s urgery acros s all s pecies of domes tic animals and common wildlife s pecies . All veterinary s cience s tudents mus t
demons trate the ethical, phys ical and emotional capacity to participate in the full curriculum and to achieve the level of
competence required by the S chool of Animal and V eterinary S ciences in order to graduate and be regis trable as a
veterinarian.
T here are inherent requirements as s ociated with the B achelor of S cience (V eterinary B ios cience) that pros pective
s tudents need to be aware of before applying. T hes e requirements include, but are not limited to, phys ical fitnes s ,
phys ical capacity to learn how to handle a range of large and s mall animals , required vaccinations (s pecifically Q fever),
and effective written communication. Applicants mus t read the Inherent R equirements and V accination G uidelines before
