Special Education Analysis and Rationale

Part 1: Case Analysis

1. Brief summary of the case:

 The case Special Education addresses an issue with a budget cut that cut the

special education testing coordinator. This caused teachers and special education

team to become upset because they feel they cannot meet all student’s needs.

Parents are concerned for their children succeeding. Lastly, the students have a

lack of routine and are upset.

2. Identify the issues to be resolved:

 The issues to be resolved are that teachers feel they cannot accommodate their

students for testing, and parents feel their child is not receiving what they should

be receiving. Students are upset because the routines have changed.

3. Stakeholders involved in the issues:

 The stakeholders are school administration, concerned parents, students involved,

and teachers.

4. One or two existing laws or court rulings that relate to the issues:
2

 IDEA federal law

5. District policies that relate to the issues:

 All district policies regarding SPED should be reviewed. The IDEA should be

reviewed and students must have all needs met.

6. Possible solutions to the issues:

 Collaborate with teachers and special education team to come up with ways to

implement a plan for testing. Present this plan to parents and families to ensure

they know student needs will be met.

7. The solution you choose to resolve the issues:

 I would take many steps in solving this issue. I would first speak to everyone

involved. I would listen and address any concerns families had. I would then

work with teachers and special education team. We would come together to

create a set plan and routine for these students during testing times. Example:

designated testing spots, free classrooms, ect)

8. Action steps (2-5) for implementing your solution, including a timeline for each step:

 I would follow through with the steps to my solution as soon as possible. First I

would gather concerns. Then I would create the best plan possible for our
3

students and school. Lastly, I would present plan to families of students to make

them aware of a new routine.

9. Potential moral and legal consequences of the solution:

 A moral consequence might be parents still upset that testing has changed. A

legal consequence could be that families still feel student needs are not being met

and can take action.

Rationale

After reviewing the case, Special Education, there are many steps that can be taken for a

solution. The problem starts when a a staffing cut happened and the special education testing

coordinator was cut (GCU, 2019). The teachers felt they could not give students what they need.

Special education also felt like they could not do their job if students were not going to have the

right accommodations. Parents and families were upset because the student’s routine changed

and they were not getting what they need. Lastly, students were upset because they were out of a

routine. If I was the principal in this case, I would come up with a plan for students and present

it to families.

The first step I would take is to speak to everyone involved. I would listen and address

concerns that were coming from families and parents. Then I would discuss concerns and

solutions with teachers and the special education team. Next, a plan would be written up to

accommodate student needs. This plan might include testing locations in the building such as

empty classrooms or during certain times. Lastly, I would present this plan to all families to

show them that a plan is in place. This would calm families and students once a routine is in

practice.

As a leader, I must lead with the school’s mission and vision in mind. Student wellbeing

and academic success come first. I must collect and gather data and feedback from others in

order to implement an effective plan during a decision process. Standard 10 states that a leader

must seek to make school more effective for each student, teachers and staff, families, and the

community (NPBEA, 2015). This case cause disruption to student learning and made everyone

involved upset. As a leader, I must come up with the best possible solution. I must consider all

viewpoints before putting a plan into place
