1. Installation disc brake

• Before installation check brake disc!
Remove preservative agent and dirt.
• For transport and holding of the brake attach a slip of a hoist to
the above bearing (21) of the brake.
• Unscrew the adjusting screws (23) before starting the installation
(transportation lock).
• If necessary fasten suitable compensating shims (not included in delivery)
to the brake’s substructure.
• For pushing the brake over the brake disc turning the connecting rod at
the nut (43) to the right (when locking from AWA (42)) until distance between
the brake linings is greater than brake disc width.
• In radial direction push the brake over the brake disc as far as the utmost
edge of the disc protrudes approximately 2mm beyond the utmost edge of
the brake linings; in axial direction the brake arms (2) and (20) must
be arranged symmetrically referred to the brake disc.
• Insert fastening screws (property class at least 8.8) in the boring of the
base frame and tighten them only a little.
• Apply the brake and turn the connecting rod on the nut (43) to the left
(when looking from AWA (42)) until both brake linings with their whole
surface and without gap are put against the brake disc.
• By turning the dome headed nut (71) to the right, pretension the brake spring (72) until the top edge of the spring
base plate shows approximately the half of the maximum value on the braking torque scale (74).
• Release and apply the brake two or three times; because of the brake shoe's application force acting against the
brake disc, the brake is centring in effect itself.
• Tighten the fastening screws with the necessary torque according to VDI 2230 and remove the slip of the hoist.

2. Reserve stroke of the releasing device

Attention ! Before any adjustment of brakes already
operating in operable machines make sure that the machine
can not be operated by itself or by outside influences !

• Apply the brake !

• By turning the dome headed nut (71) to the right, pretension the
brake spring (72) until the top edge of the spring base plate (73)
shows approximately 70 up to 80% of the maximum value on
the braking torque scale (74).
• By turning the connecting rod at the nut (43) to the left (when looking from
AWA (42)) the piston rod of the releasing device (9) will be pulled out.
The length of the piston rod jutting out of the releasing device (9) in case
of the brake is applied is called the Reserve stroke (X). The setting should be
made as specified on the type plate of the brake ("reserve stroke at the
thruster") or in the Test report 2.2.

The reserve stroke is important to the proper functioning

of the brake and the setting should therefore be made
very carefully.

3. Braking torque

• Apply the brake !

• By turning the dome headed nut (71), pretension the brake spring (72)
until the top edge of the spring base plate (73) shows
the required value on the braking torque scale (74).
• Check the reserve stroke (X) of the releasing device (9) and the air gap
of the brake linings and adjust it according to item “reserve stroke
of the releasing device” if necessary,
• Secure the adjusted braking torque value by means of the
locking plate (75) under the dome headed nut (71).

It is not allowed to adjust and to secure the nominal value

of the braking torque without grinding-in the friction
linings according to item 6 !

4. Air gap at the friction linings

• Apply the brake !
• After unscrewing the counter nuts adjust the adjusting screws (22)
until there is a distance between the screws (22) and the brake shoes
of approximately 0,5 up to 0,8 mm on both sides.
• Release the brake !
• Adjust the adjusting screws (23) until there is the same distance
between the brake disc and the brake linings on both sides, that
means the air gap must be of the same size at both linings and
constant along the full height of the linings. If necessary adjust
the screws (22) accordingly.
• The size of the air gap depends on the reserve stroke set on the
actuator (releasing device). If the reserve stroke is increased in
relation to the total stroke length, the air gap becomes smaller.
• These values should be attained after the setting
is completed :
 RST1/ SST10 0,5 till 1,0mm
 RST2 1,0 till 1,5mm
 SST3 1,0 till 1,5mm

After finishing secure the adjustments by tightening

the counter nuts of the adjusting screws (22) and (23)!

5. Automatic wear adjustment AWA

• This adjustment is only necessary in case of the brake is equipped with an
automatic wear adjustment (42) (concerning "Test report 2.2").
• Apply the brake !
• Screw the adjusting screw (47) totally out of the guide hole (45) and
push up the driving pin (46) in the guide hole as far as possible.
• Release the brake once and apply it again; the driving pin
is now positioned.
• Now screw the adjusting screw (47) again into the guide hole
until that it does not touch the driving pin (air gap of approx. 0,5 mm).
• Secure the adjusting screw (47) with the counter nut (48).

• Is those adjustment carried out not carefully,

a failure of the brake can occur !

• Nevertheless the brake is equipped with an AWA the user has to

carry out regularly visual inspections (Reserve stroke) and
checks of the brake's efficacy.

6. Running-in period
• A running-in period is always necessary when mounting
 a new brake ,
 new friction linings,
 a new brake disc,
in order to get an adequate contact pattern of the friction surfaces and to reach the full braking torque. In this phase the
braking effect can be reduced and an increased wear of the brake linings can occur.
• In case of the whole drive which has to be braked is already mounted and test brakings with load can be carried out at
justifiable expense the following items have to complied with:
 brake up to 10 times without load and with approximately the half of the nominal rotations of the brake disc;
 brake up to 10 times with half of load and step by step increasing speed up to the nominal rotations;
 check the reserve stroke (X) of the releasing device (9) and the air gap of the brake linings;
 brake up to 10 times with nominal load and step by step increasing speed up to the nominal rotations;
•In case of test braking with load are impracticable, the friction linings should be grinded-in by means of the drive's motor
operating against the applied brake.
Avoid overheat of the friction linings during running-in period ! Annealing colour of the brake disc
during running-in period indicates overstressing ! Let the brake disc get cool between the brake
operations !

• The following characteristic values are not allowed to be exceeded during running-in period
 in case of using linings made from organic material : vmax= 30 m/s; tb= 5 s; Tmax= 180 °C
 in case of using linings made from sintered material: vmax= 70 m/s; tb= 5 s; Tmax= 300 °C

Don't touch brake disc and brake linings during running-in period (danger of burning)! Keep
adequate safe distance to the brake disc (danger of wounding because of rotating parts and
abraded particles) !
