Examples

“Octavia’s Temperature was high enough to justify ringing for the doctor”

Meaning: Octavia was seriously ill for which doctor had to be called in any
circumstances.

Effect on writer: It signifies how concerned the mother is.

“They were casting a last look at their former home”

Meaning: They were moving to another place

Effect: Expresses how attached they were to their former home.

“he fixed me with intense stare”

Meaning: He focused at me / He glared at me / he looked at me closely

Effect: It conveys the seriousness of the situation. Joe wants him to know that he
isn’t joking/ is serious.

“we would saunter off down the path”

Meaning: They walked slowly down the path / They walked casually down.

Effect:

“I knew without a shadow of doubt that I wanted to be a collector of Animals”

Meaning: He was certain/definite/he was sure that he wanted to be a zoologist.

Effect: Shows the Determination of the writer / confidence.

“ ’This is the last straw’ roared Larry. So get that animal out of here!”

Meaning: Lary want the animal out of the house because he is tired/ fed up of it.

Effect: Shows his anger / intolerance / unsympathetic
