Porter’s five force model is a scheme to evaluate competition of business within the market. UK
has vast variety of industries and one of the fast growing industry is the shoe industry. The shoe
industry is very diversified, therefore the industry always remain in a creative phase to fulfill the
demand of the consumers. With the advancement in British shoe manufacturing there has also
been a revival of famous British shoe brands.
Bargaining power of suppliers: Swapping between suppliers is very high in the industry so the
power of supplier is very low and they work on instructions and prices fixed by the industry. The
main suppliers for shoe industry is leather and decrease in livestock can increase the prices due
to high supply demand (IBIS world, 2020)
Bargaining power of buyers: As there are many industries so the switching cost for the buyers is
low except for the renowned brands where brand reliability is very high. Now buyers have easy
access through online shopping. Although the renowned brands control the industry’s rate but
they cannot fix the prices without the consumer’s demand. So the buyers have high bargaining
power in the market.
Threat of substitute: Threat to the shoe industry by substitute is very low as the shoe industry
has very much diversity like high heeled shoes, tennis shoes and running shoes so there is no
threat of replacement by a new substitute.
Barriers to Entry: In UK shoe industry brand loyalty is very high, and the industry is dominated
by the giant players so the entry for the new players
Conclusion:
Robert Perkins discussed that UK shoe manufacturing industry has a very bright future as the
inflation rate in UK is low as compare to the far east countries. Automation and robotics are
helping to lessen costs in the UK by taking some of the work content out of the manufacturing
processes (Williamson, 2018).
