Jersey Zoological Park or Jersey Zoo is a 25- acre (100,000 m²) zoological park established in 1959 on the island of Jersey in
the English Channel by naturalist and author Gerald Durrell (1925-1995). It is now officially called Durrell Wildlife after its
founder, and in an attempt to shed its stereotype as a Zoo. Despite a lack of emphasis on large animals and its relatively out-
of-the-way location, it has approximately 169,000 visitors per year with numbers tending to vary with the tourist trade to
Jersey. Durrell began his career capturing animals for other zoos, but thought that the facilities needed to concentrate more on

Along the eastern coast of Australia is one of the most fascinating areas of the natural world – the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is more than 2,000 kilometers long, but it isn’t really one long reef. It is actually made up of about
3,000 separate coral reefs.
The Great Barrier Reef is like a large city under the sea filled with many species of marine life. More than 2,000
species of fish inhabit it. There are also about 400 different species of coral and 500 species of seaweed. The fish include
several kinds of sharks. The most common one is the blacktip reef shark. It gets its name from the black coloring on the end
of its fins.
The blacktip shark isn’t a dangerous shark, but there are dangerous animals on the reef. The tiger shark, for example,
is an aggressive shark. There are several kinds of poisonous jellyfish, and there are poisonous snakes, too. Stingrays can
injure people with their sharp tails. Divers have to be careful on the Great Barrier Reef.
Some animals on the reef are dangerous to people, but people are even more dangerous to the reef. Agriculture in
Australia has caused water pollution, and this has already killed some areas of the reef. Divers cause damage when they take
bits of coral from the reef, or when they stand on the reef. If humans don’t learn to respect and protect natural treasures like
the Great Barrier Reef, these treasures could one day disappear from the earth.

Many believe only animals are endangered. They think wild plants can just grow back after damage. This is not true.
Our plants are declining at an alarming rate. Among them are some of the most beautiful and useful species on Earth. The
importance of plants to life on Earth is immeasurable. The landscape and wildlife we enjoy, the food we eat, even the air we
breathe is connected to plant life.
Plants support wildlife. The U.S. Forest Service has stated that for every plant species that goes extinct, up to 30 other
species of plants, insects and other animals may also decline. Plants provide the food and habitat for wildlife.
Plants support a healthy environment. They provide clean air, help hold soil in place, clean water, moderate wind and
water impacts, and shade the earth.
Plants support people. Plants give many gifts to man. They provide food, fiber, and fuels. Many plants are known to
contain chemicals that can be used to treat human illnesses. Others have the ability to fight agricultural pests and improve
existing crops.
This is a real crisis. Habitat destruction, over collection, and other environmental damage are eroding our natural plant
communities. Some species have declined to such small numbers that a bad storm or a plant collector could wipe them out in
minutes. Without intervention they will be lost forever.

*READING
Reading, as you know, is a continuous and never ending process. If you do very little reading, or if you read only
material that offers no challenge to your comprehension, your reading will be of very little use. Once we reach a certain age,
or once our formal schooling is completed, many of us become so restricted in our choice of reading that we rarely read any
new type of reading experience. We tend to read only books in our professional or business field, or only inspirational books,
or only our favorite newspapers every morning, or only one magazine for which we have developed a preference. And the
trouble starts here. You should neither read only for entertainment nor only for information but you should also read for
intellectual growth, for mental stimulation, for enriching your background of knowledge, for wisdom, and for broader outlook
and mature understanding.
What kind of books should you read to continue your intellectual growth, to gain a background for opinion and for
judgment? The answer is simple one: Read books in fields you have little or no acquaintance with, books that will open for
you new horizons of learning, books that will help you explore new areas of knowledge and experience, books that will make
the world and people more understandable to you. Sadly, more and more people today are giving up the printed word in favor
of being entertained and informed by watching TV, a popular entertainment ,device present at almost homes. More and more
children are being subjected to TV programming, perhaps as a babysitter. More than two hours of TV time per day are now a
part of children development, generating physiological and mental problems that are of growing concern among experts.
