As Sarah walked home from school, she kept her eyes on the long winding street.

It was a

perfect spring afternoon with a slight breeze and the smell of flowers in the air. Yet even with all

of this beauty around her… the birds chirping, the bees buzzing, and the trees swaying, Sarah

was having an internal battle. All she wanted was happiness, yet all she got was the feeling that

she was a burden. Her mom, Caroline, never seemed to have time for her, her dad left her as a

baby, and her boyfriend Jamison seemed to be annoyed with her all day.

“Why is it that no one seems to like me anymore” she thought as she walked down the concrete

pavers up to her doorsteps. When she walked through her door she was greeted by the

wagging of an auburn tail and the smile of her dog Ginny. “At least you still love me.” She said

to the beautiful goldendoodle standing in front of her. As she walked down the hallway around

the corner to her moms room she got an odd feeling.

She peeked through a crack in her mom's door and didn't see anything, and so she continued to

walk into her moms room.

Mom is the CFO at a multimillion dollar up and coming tech company. Her day starts with

waking up at 5 am, making breakfast for me and her, and then driving me to school. She then

makes the forty-five minute drive to downtown Dallas where she sits at her desk until about

10:30pm. She is always so busy at work that I never get to see her anymore.

I walked out of her room and into the kitchen to get an after school snack. I saw some

strawberries on the counter and quickly grabbed a handful and washed them off.

As I was eating my strawberries I heard Ginny start whining.

I followed the sound of the tiny wimpers until I got to the door of my moms closet. As I slowly

pushed it open the whimpers got louder and louder.

It’s been five days since I found my mom hanging in her closet. All I can remember is how her

face looked black and blue. This is the scariest thing that could possibly happen to someone. To

find the person you loved most had taken their own life and left the mess for you to clean up is

one thing, but in a way she took part of my life away too.

Ginny and I are living with my grandparents at the moment. I love them too but they are starting

to get old and frail and I know that they won't be able to raise me forever.

My life went from hanging out with Jamison on the weekends and listening to music with my

best friend Katelyn, to planning funerals and talking about my mom’s will with her lawyer.

All I wanted was for her to come back. I felt so much pain and resentment that she would do this

to me. Why would she leave me and essentially make me an orphan? Why would she leave me

to fend for myself in this big scary world? Why would she feel the need to take the pain from

her life and give it to me? What am I supposed to do without her?

Sitting and watching as your mother is lowered into the ground and covered with 6 feet of dirt is

the most sobering thing a person can go through. I will never forget the last time I got to touch

my mom's cold limp hand. Parents are supposed to be there for their kids, but sometimes

people are going through an internal battle that no one knows about.
