MAGNETS AND ELECTROMAGNETS

A magnet is a kind of mysterious force. It comes from two sorts of magnets: permanent and
electromagnets.
Permanent magnets are usually made from a special kind of steel. They can attract other things
made of steel and iron.
The metallic elements that show strong magnetic properties are iron, cobalt and nickel.
When two magnets are brought close together, two things can happen:
- They can attract each other.
- They can repel each other.
When suspended from a thread, a bar magnet aligns itself in a north-south direction.
Magnet suspended

The part of which points towards the north when the magnet is free to move is called north -
seeking pole of north - pole. The other end of the magnet is the south – seeking pole or south-
pole.
There are forces of attraction between the north – pole and the south pole of a magnet.
When the north - pole is brought close to a south pole of another magnet, the two magnets
attracts.
Magnets attraction

When two like poles of two magnets are brought close together, the magnets repel.
Magnets repelling
General rules
Like poles of magnets repel.
Unlike poles of magnets attracts.
Magnetic field
The region around a magnet in which the pull of the magnetic force acts on a magnetic material
is called magnetic field. The magnetic field lines move from north-pole to south - pole.
A stronger magnet has many magnetic field lines closer together.

ELECTROMAGNET
An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric
current. Electromagnets usually consist of wire wound into a coil. A current through the wire
creates a magnetic field which is concentrated in the hole, denoting the center of the coil
It is a temporary magnet that is made by connecting a coil of wire to a battery in a circuit. It is
called an electromagnet because current electricity in the wire creates a magnetic field around
it.
To make the electromagnet stronger, an iron bar is placed inside the coil of wire carrying
electric current. When the circuit is broken, the electromagnet loses its magnetism completely.
When then switch is closed, the electromagnet attracts the iron fillings.

When the switch is open, the electromagnet loses its magnetism and ceases to be a magnet.
The iron fillings fall back into the basin.
If the bar inside then coil of wire is steel instead of iron, the steel bar keeps its magnetism
though after the switch is open such that the attracted object remain stuck to the steel
electromagnet.
Steel is more difficult to magnetise and is not easily demagnetised. An iron core makes a
temporary electromagnet. ... A steel core makes a more permanent magnet. It does not lose its
magnetism quickly when the current is switched off.
Uses of electromagnets

We can increase the strength of the electromagnet by:

- Increasing the number of turns in then coil
- Increasing g then current by adding more cells.
