Implicit and Explicit Claims of Texts

Name Naomi Angel L. Belonio Date ______

Course & Section 11 STEM 2 Score __

Do You Remember?

Try differentiating the implicit from the explicit.

- Implicit is something that is understood but not completely stated. Explicit
is something that is clearly stated.

Try This!

Recall at least three (3) lines from a movie you saw. Explore the possibilities
regarding the implicit ideas behind the explicit ones (outrightly said) given.

A whisker away
- “The world is filled with things I hate and things I don’t need.
But if there’s nothing when I step out of here, I wouldn’t want
that.” – Hinode. For me, this line is an example of an explicit
idea with implicit behind it. I can say that this is an explicit idea
because it isn’t stated what things he hates and what things
that he needs. He might be implying on a person or a thing,
but he clearly said that the world is full of things he hates and
doesn’t need.

Your Name
- “Once in a while when I wake up. I find myself crying.” –
Mitsuha Miyamizu. I think this is an example of an explicit idea
with implicit behind it because it is clearly stated that she
wakes up and finds herself crying, but the reason behind her
tears isn’t clear.

15
Anohana
“I thought I could just apologize tomorrow. But that tomorrow never
came.” – Jinta Yadomi

For me this is an example of explicit idea with an implicit behind it

because it isn’t clearly stated what does Jinta mean about that
tomorrow.

As a class, discuss the answers to these questions:

1. Who were the two (2) strong men in Emily’s life?

- Her father and Homer Barron

2. What set tongues wagging when she went out with Homer Barron?

- The people think they were married.

3. Why do you think she forced Homer Barron to stay?

- I think she forced Barron to stay because she has no one to rely on.

4. Would you force someone to stay in a relationship?

- I wouldn’t force someone into a relationship because everyone has their

own freedom. If they don’t want me anymore, so be it. I won’t force them

to stay with me because they have their own lives and they are free to do

what they want.

5. What was the significance of the arsenic she bought with the smell that
plagued the neighbor causing them to spray lime around and in her house?

- I think she did that because she wanted someone to take care and look for

her because she needed a parent figure.

6. What could she have done to the man? Cite your proof. How does this tie
up with the last three (3) paragraphs?

17
Try This!

A. Properly sequence the events in this postmodernist story whose frames were
intentionally collapsed; number these from 1-8.

7 So, she died of old age, and when they broke down the door to the

Barron on the bed.
6 One time, there was that smell that made the aldermen in town send
someone to spray lime around and in her house.
4 Homer bragged and told the men he was not the marrying type.
3 She began going out with the day laborer, Homer Barron.
1 The old man Grierson died leaving Emily, his daughter, behind.
2 She refused to pay taxes as Colonel Sartoris had said the town owed
her family money.
8 Curiously, there was an indentation on the pillow beside the body and
a strand of gray hair.
5 Emily bought poison from the druggist.

D. Have a 10-sentence write-up on the question: ‘Should someone be forced
to stay in a relationship?’

Being in a relationship is fun, but when someone is forced to
_________________________________________________
stay in a relationship, it isn’t fun at all. It isn’t okay to force someone to

stay with you because it can be bad for their own health. Forcing
someone to stay is such a toxic trait that it can actually make someone

me, no one should be forced in a relationship. If they don’t have
