Case name: Circuit Board Fabrication, Inc.

Q1 What type of process flow structure is CBF using?

CBF, Inc. is using a batch shop process flow structure. Batch shop is a process structure that
produces a moderate variety of standard products at relatively low volumes. This kind of
structure is usually used in manufacturing electronic devices. The company conducts
production on the basis of the average work size or typical orders, and then conducts the
manufacturing process in batches to meet the specific requirements of each order. Because of
persistent defects in the factory, the company manufactured 75 boards per batch in total to
compensate for the 20% of the boards they normally reject in the process.

Q2 Diagram the process in a manner similar to Exhibit 7.7.

Q3 Analyze the capacity of the process.
(See appendix 1)
After we use the formula (run time*75+setup time), we have the “operation time per order”.
Then we can calculate “capacity per day” (number of machines*60*7.5/(operation time per
order)). We time the “minimum of capacity per day” with the “average size per job”, the
product is 900. This means the maximum product per day is less than the number, 1000,
which this plant is designed to attend. Hence, the priority is to make cleaning and coating
more efficient.

Q4 What is the impact of losses in the process in the inspection and final test?
The losses in the inspection and final inspection process is huge. The company increases
25% in the production to compensate for the losses in the two areas. With a 5% margin for
error, CBF production of boards must perfectly produce or there will be losses in the two
processes.

Q5 What recommendations would you make for a short-term solution to CBS’s problems?
The recommended solution for CBF inc in short term is to raise the working hours and
manpower to increase the production of the board. Raising the quality of the blank board
comes into CBP inc is also a way to solve the problem.

Q6 What long-term recommendations would you make?

In order to accelerate the production procedure, Circuit Board Fabricators, Inc. should
purchase more machines in the long-term. In addition, the introduction of automation to
substitute manual labor can also bring many benefits to the company, such as decreasing the
errors and expanding the total operating time to produce the boards. Furthermore, monthly
training and evaluations should be implemented so as to discover the deficiencies in the
production line. Through these methods, the condition of Circuit Board Fabricators, Inc. is
expected to improve.
