Since we are all in the music “business”, it’s important to have a business plan to make sure you are making good use of your time and that you are creating commercial songs that you can promote and get cut.
STRATEGIC WRITING 1. How often do you plan to write? 2. What is your target number of songs to complete each week? 3. Who to write with a. What artists do you know that you would like to work into your schedule regularly? b. What writers at publishing companies do you write with? Are they regularly on your calendar? 4. What percentage of your total writes do you think should be in these three categories? a. ballad b. mid-tempo c. up-tempo 5. Do you educate yourself about current artist’s “brands” and write toward those brands? If not, how could you do that better in the coming year? 6. How could you write more strategically in the coming year?
SONG PROMOTION 1. What are your best connections for pitching your own songs? 2. How many of your own songs do you want to try to pitch each week next year? 3. Do you keep up with who is cutting and communicate pitch ideas to your pluggers? (If you have a plugger) If not, how could you do that better? 4. How do you promote yourself and your music?
NETWORKING 1. What activities do you participate in that put you in position to meet and mingle with industry people? 2. How involved are you with your PRO and their activities? How could you get more involved there? 3. Do you do anything to teach and mentor young writers and artists? 4. Are there “camps” in that you would like to start writing with? If so, which ones and how do you think you could best get into those camps?
