and the water industry.
I am committed to achieving chartered chemical engineer status and I am currently an Associate
Member of IChemE and a member of the IChemE Water Special Interest Group. I often
T C ON
attend technical seminars by IChemE and other institutions to keep up to date with technical
advancements and for my own professional development. I have attended IChemE events
on mobile and emergency water treatment, water treatment for power generation and a “get
chartered” event.
Y
I am committed to helping others progress in their career and I set up the developing engineer’s
forum which is described in question Ciii. I have represented my company at university

career events and have been involved in the planning of graduate recruitment campaigns. I

represented the company as a recent graduate during a visit from the IChemE which resulted in
the accreditation of our graduate training scheme.
N
I am a registered science and engineering ambassador for STEMNET and have acted as a mentor
to school children on a number of programs including Go4Set. I have also planned placements
for several work experience students.
RE
The basis of my work in the water industry is to protect public health and the environment and
I am mindful of the ethical implications. In 2007 I attended an IChemE workshop on ethics for
engineers. I believe everyone has a right to safe water and sanitation and in my spare time I

school children in an attempt to inspire the next generation of engineers. In my time with an EPC
contractor, I undertook continuous professional development as part of the graduate scheme
DO
and regularly participated in meetings of the IChemE special interest group for oil and natural
gas and internal company lunch and learn sessions. As a graduate working for an international
oil company (IOC), I am gaining exposure to various global business functions and buillding
a technical foundation in refinery operations. In my current role where I undertake project
development, I make certain to abide by company business principles. During my PhD degree,
I maintained confidentiality when assessing student coursework. This application underlines my
strong commitment to achieve chartered chemical engineer status, following my investiture as
an Affiliate Member in 2000 and an Associate Member in 2003.

compliance. I am responsible for keeping up-to-date with current legislations and ensuring that
the site maintains compliance with all EHS statutory and corporate legislations. For example, I
am currently working on a project with the engineering capital projects department to update

their project risk assessment process and ensuring that the relevant legislation are considered
at various stages of a project life cycle.
My project whereby SIL assessments were carried out on site equipment was done to BS EN

The site work equipment procedure I developed was written to comply with Provision and Use
of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998.
Y
I am responsible for ensuring regular EHS audits are carried out for the departments. I am
responsible for and also help the site ensure compliance in order to be audit ready always, as

there could be a visit from a HSE Inspector at any time. I have also helped the site to prepare

for the 3 yearly corporate EHS audit which took place in October 2008. The preparation was
carried out through regular meetings, carrying out gap analysis in order to identify EHS gaps
that needed fixing and also helped with professional advice and input to fix gaps. An example
N
of where a gap was fixed was by writing and implementing the new site work equipment
procedure described above.
RE
I am currently organising a work placement for a 16 year old, who is interested in studying
chemical engineering.
My commitment to gaining chartered chemical engineer status by making this application.
FE
For the re-design of a process plant, I was involved with investigating the impact of any change
to the emission of reaction vessel to atmosphere during a HAZOP. It was established that an
DO
outlet pressure relief valve got removed, but there was no overall change in emissions. The EA
agreed that no change was required to the permit.
During my final year at university, and the subsequent summer, I assisted with a series of events

for high school students encouraging them to consider chemical engineering as a career.
I have directly supervised (and after changing roles, continued to mentor and advise) a
graduate chemical engineer who joined the company on a short term contract and has now
gained a permanent management role within the business.
I keep up to date with developments within the profession through subscription to
processing and pharmaceutical magazines and websites. I am also a member of the IChemE
Pharmaceutical Special Interest Group and have recently joined the Project Management SIG,
and have attended several IChemE events including Pharma SIG seminars and several Hull
local member group events. I am currently planning a factory visit for the local group, primarily
oil and gas based, to our site for an overview of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
