Chapter I
Introduction

1.1. Background of studies

The development of information technology increasingly affect human life.

Along its development, the people of Indonesia began to recognize the internet,
television, radio and others. One of them is the Internet which is a form of integration
between the flow of communication with the development of technology. One of the
most popular web-based services is social networking sites. Indonesia became a
country in Asia which experienced the second rapid growth after Malaysia in
accessing one social network (facebook). The increasing number of social network
users in Indonesia is due to the increasingly complete internet access facility by
mobile phone producers and communications service providers. Television is an
electronic mass media most in demand by the public and most have a great influence
on the knowledge, motivation, and attitudes and behavior of spectators. Not looking
at age, gender, position, and so forth. Compared to other communications media,
television can exert a stronger influence than radio and newspapers. This happens
because of the power of audio visual television that touches the psychological aspects
of viewers.
` The pattern of social media use by adolescents can be influenced by the
family, the environment, and the individual characteristics of adolescents. The family
is the first and foremost environment that gives much influence to various aspects of
children's social development. Teenagers or children who have middle to upper
economic background can easily access other social networks or media using Mobile
or internet facility at home or internet café.
Establishing close and harmonious relationships with peers is very important in
adolescence. Peer influence on attitudes, speech, interests, appearance, and behavior
is greater than the influence of the family.

social media usage Page 3

Similarly with social media, one example in the can from a social network
obtained by teenagers through peers can affect the pattern of use of social networking
by adolescents. Lots of interesting features in social networking / social media make
them tend to be lazy and addicted .. these circumstances make them a lot of wasted
time and disturbed activity, such as school, studying, eating, sleeping, socializing
with the environment and helping parents. Because the child is too tired with the fun
in the network / social media. In addition to negative impacts, media / social
networking also has benefits that can be perceived by users.

Chapter II
Discussion
1. Social media definition
Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation
and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via
virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone and built-in social
media services currently available introduces challenges of definition; however, there
are some common features :

1. Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications.

2. User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or
videos, and data generated through all online interactions, are the lifeblood of
social media.
3. Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are designed
and maintained by the social media organization.
4. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by
connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups.

Users typically access social media services via web-based technologies on

desktop computers, and laptops, or download services that offer social media
functionality to their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablet computers). When
engaging with these services, users can create highly interactive platforms through
which individuals, communities and organizations can share, co-create, discuss, and
modify user-generated content or pre-made content posted online. They introduce
substantial and pervasive changes to communication between businesses,
organizations, communities and individuals.Social media changes the way individuals
and large organizations communicate. These changes are the focus of the emerging
field of technoself studies. Social media differ from paper-based media (e.g.,
magazines and newspapers) or traditional electronic media such as TV broadcasting

social media usage Page 5

in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, interactivity, usability,
immediacy, and permanence. Social media operate in a dialogic transmission system
(many sources to many receivers). This is in contrast to traditional media which
operates under a monologic transmission model (one source to many receivers), such
as a paper newspaper which is delivered to many subscribers or a radio station which
broadcasts the same programs to an entire city. Some of the most popular social
media websites are Baidu Tieba, Facebook (and its associated Facebook Messenger),
Gab, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter,
Viber, VK, WeChat, Weibo, WhatsApp, Wikia, and YouTube. These social media
websites have more than 100,000,000 registered users.

In 2016, Merriam-Webster defined social media as "Forms of electronic

communication (such as Web sites) through which people create online communities
to share information, ideas, personal messages, etc.

social media usage Page 6

Classification of social media and overview of how important different types of social
media (e.g. blogs) are for each of a company's operational functions (e.g. marketing)

The term social media is usually used to describe social networking sites such as:

1. Facebook – an online social networking site that allows users to create their
personal profiles, share photos and videos, and communicate with other users
2. Twitter – an internet service that allows users to post "tweets" for their
followers to see updates in real-time
3. LinkedIn – a networking website for the business community that allows
users to create professional profiles, post resumes, and communicate with
other professionals and job-seekers.
4. Pinterest – an online community that allows users to display photos of items
found on the web by "pinning" them and sharing ideas with others.
5. Snapchat – an app for mobile devices that allows users to send and share
photos of themselves doing their daily activities.

Social media technologies take many different forms including blogs,

business networks, enterprise social networks, forums, microblogs, photo sharing,
products/services review, social bookmarking, social gaming, social networks, video
sharing, and virtual worlds. The development of social media started off with simple
platforms such as sixdegrees.com. Unlike instant messaging clients such as ICQ and
AOL's AIM, or chat clients like IRC, iChat or Chat Television, sixdegrees.com was
the first online business that was created for real people, using their real names.
However, the first social networks were short-lived because their users lost interest.
The Social Network Revolution has led to the rise of the networking sites. Research
shows that the audience spends 22 percent of their time on social networking sites,
thus proving how popular social media platforms have become. This increase is
because of the smart phones that are now in the daily lives of most humans.

2. History of Social Media

How old is social media? If you guessed somewhere around the 2000 mark you’d
be very wrong. The first instance of what we now call social media was the
Computerised Bulletin Board System created in 1978.

This informative infographic gives you a short, but thorough, history of social
media right from its roots in 1978 through to today. Beyond telling you when a
particular social media service was created, (Blogger in August of 1999, for instance),
it also gives you other relevant pieces of historical information.

For instance, it includes the 2009 hype surrounding Facebook’s decision to

change its terms of service in respect of user generated content. This move has
probably stuck in the minds of most as the “Facebook can sell your pictures” incident.

The infographic was created by the global law firm Morrison and Foerster. The
company’s interest in social media arises from its lawyers “seeing complex, cutting-
edge legal issues arising out of social media”.
