FABRICATION SERVICES’ SURFACE AREA SHEET

NOTE: Pipe factor is square foot per lineal foot. Bend square footage is in addition to pipe used for the bend.
Elbows, flanges, tees, reducers, tapers, swages, caps, heads, stub ends, olets, and valves are square foot per each.
Guidelines for Determining
Surface Area of Piping Components

The following guidelines should be used by all pipe fabrication facilities to determine surface
areas of
components.

1. Surface areas should be determined from the CB&I Surface Area Sheet.
2. When an item is not covered by the CB&I Surface Area Sheet, but the next larger NPS
and a smaller NPS are covered in the table, you should interpolate the value from the
CB&I Surface Area Sheet. Use the Excel Workbook titled “Component Surface Area
Calculator” for the interpolation if necessary.
3. The following formulas shall be used to determine surface area for components not
covered by the CB&I Surface Area Sheet. These formulas have been incorporated in the
Excel Workbook titled “Component Surface Area Calculator” for ease of use.

A. Pipe
i. Min ID/ Min wall pipe shall be converted to a nominal OD
ii. SA (SF/FT) = 0.2618 X OD

B. Elbows – 90 degrees and less – Long and short radius with zero straight tangent length
i. Both 90-degree long radius and short radius elbows are calculated as long
radius elbows.
ii. 45-degree elbows are calculated as 90-degree long radius elbow.
iii. SA (SF/EA) = 0.0514 X NPS X OD

C. Elbows – Greater than 90 degrees – Long and short radius with zero straight tangent
length
i. All long and short radius elbows with angle greater than 90-degrees are
calculated as 180-degree long radius elbows with zero straight tangent.
ii. SA (SF/EA) = 0.1028 X NPS X OD

D. Elbows – Other than Long and short radius

i. Treat elbows with centerline radius larger than 1-1/2 D as bends.
ii. Treat long tangent elbows as bends using a minimum CLR of 1-1/2 X NPS

E. Bends
i. Determine Degree of Bend (DOB) in inches; Determine Centerline Radius
(CLR) in inches
ii. Determine the total straight tangent length (accumulate for both ends of the
bend (STL), in inches
iii. Obtain the SA per foot of the same size pipe
iv. SA (SF/EA) =
[0.000381 X DOB X CLR X OD] + [STL X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT) / 12]
F. Reducers, Transitions and Tapers
i. All are calculated as one-size drop; All are calculated as conical reducers.
ii. Determine Overall Length (OAL), in inches.
iii. Large end diameter = ODLE; Small end diameter = ODSE
iv. SA (SF/EA) =
0.0219 X (ODLE/2 + ODSE/2) X SQRT{(ODLE/2-ODSE/2)2 + (OAL) 2}

G. Swages
i. Swages are calculated as pipe.
ii. Determine the Overall Length (OAL), in inches.
iii. SA (SF/EA) = (OAL/12) X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT)

H. Tees & Reducing Tees

i. Tees and reducing tees are calculated as full sized equal tees.
ii. Obtain the SA per foot of the same size pipe
iii. For Tees less than 48” OD
a. SA (SF/EA) = [0.1875 X OD] X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT)
iv. For Tees 48” OD and over
a. SA (SF/EA) = [2.5 + (0.125 X OD)] X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT)

I. Crosses
i. SA (SF/EA) = 1.4 X (SA of Tee, SF/EA)

J. Laterals and Wyes

i. SA (SF/EA) = 2.1 X (SA of Tee, SF/EA)

K. Caps and Heads

i. Caps and heads are calculated as a 2:1 elliptical with a 2-1/2” straight flange.
ii. Obtain the SA per foot of the same size pipe
iii. SA (SF/EA) = [(0.0076 X (OD) 2]+ [0.2083 X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT)]

L. Stub Ends
i. Obtain the SA per foot of the same size pipe
ii. SA (SF/EA) = (OAL + 2”) X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT) / 12

M. Flanges
i. Determine the OD of the flange (OD)
ii. Determine the length thru the bolt holes (LTB)
iii. SA (SF/EA) = (0.0093 X OD2) + (0.0219 X OD X LTB)

N. O’lets and other Set-on branch attachments

i. Determine the largest OD of the fitting
ii. Determine the projected height, “A”, from the OD of the header
iii. SA (SF/EA) = 0.0219 X OD X A

O. Valves – Welded
i. Obtain the SA per foot of the same size pipe
ii. SA (SF/EA) = 4 X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT)

P. Valves - Flanged
i. Obtain the SA per foot of the same size pipe
ii. SA (SF/EA) = 6 X (SA of Pipe, SF/FT)

Q. Surface Area determination for Plate

i. Surface area equals 2 SF/ SF of plate.
ii. For cut pieces surface area equals LENGTH X WIDTH / 144 * 2, Where length
and width are in inches.

R. Surface Area determination for Structural Shapes

i. Surface Area equals the weight per foot multiplied by the appropriate factor for
the type of shape and the weight classification.

S. Other specialty items or unpublished items should be based on manufacturers' information.
