1 Scope

1.1 This specification defines the minimum mandatory requirements for the direct
charge purchase of seamless and longitudinal seam submerged-arc welded pipe
in quantities less than a mill run to be purchased in accordance with 01-SAMSS-
035. This Specification is therefore applicable when a request for quotation on a
pipe order yields no bids to 01-SAMSS-035 because of the small size of the
order. Pipe orders large enough to be purchased in accordance with 01-SAMSS-
035 shall not be broken into smaller orders for the purpose of substituting this
specification. Pipes shall be procured from manufacturers approved by Saudi
Aramco.
Commentary Note:

This specification is meant for use on small pipe orders that are placed with
sources other than pipe mills because the quantities involved are too small for a
mill run (≥50 tons). The intent is to use common API and ASTM standards as
much as possible, with only those additional chemistry, hardness, and
certification requirements that are deemed necessary to ensure safe, reliable
operation in the intended services.

1.2 This specification applies only to seamless and longitudinal seam submerged-arc
welded pipe in strength grades equivalent to API SPEC 5L Grade B through API
SPEC 5L X60. The size ranges covered vary depending on the API or ASTM
specification being used.

1.2.1 Seamless pipe intended for wet sour services does not require HIC
testing.

1.2.2 Longitudinal seam submerged-arc welded pipe intended for wet sour
services shall meet the additional hydrogen-induced cracking sensitivity
test requirements of 01-SAMSS-016. Each heat in the purchase must be
tested, subject to the requirements of Inspection Form 175-010200.

1.2.3 Longitudinal seam submerged-arc welded pipe intended for sour service
and purchased per this specification must be manufactured from plates
intentionally fabricated to be HIC resistant. The original or certified
steel mill certificate shall indicate that the plates were manufactured to
be HIC resistant.

1.2.4 Pseudo-HIC Resistant steel pipe shall not be used for sour service.
Pseudo-HIC Resistant Plate is plate that is not fabricated utilizing the
quality control/assurance and fabrication measures to intentionally
produce HIC resistant steel.

1.3 This specification does not apply to the following:

galvanized, or cement-lined) unless specified in the Purchase Order.

1.3.2 Submerged-arc spiral welded pipe, electric resistance welded pipe, or

high frequency induction welded pipe.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
