In 2012, Taylor Swift released a music video for her hit song “I Knew You Were
Trouble.” Two years later in 2014, the metalcore band We Came as Romans released a music
video cover of the same song. The two adaptations of the song are very similar in meaning but
appeal to different audiences, have different styles and have a different approach on music
videos.
Taylor Swift starts off her video with a voice over. She wakes up in an abandoned desert
and around her you can see trash and debris covering the desert. Once the music starts, the video
flashes back to old memories she shared with her boyfriend. Viewers will watch them playing by
train tracks, driving in cars, eating at restaurants and going to bars, going to concerts and sharing
multiple intimate moments. All of this is happening while Swift is still seen in the dessert singing
We Came as Romans did a cover of this song along with a music video. This cover was
released in 2014 and is part of an album series called “Punk Goes Pop”. This is when a band
from the punk and metalcore genre release their own adaptations of pop songs. We Came as
Romans started their video off with the main singer walking outside and as he is walking; we see
flashes of the band playing the song. We then see a girl come out of her house and the main
singer notices her and obviously starts to be interesting in her. The girl then drives away with
another guy which upsets the singer. Throughout the video you see the singer trying to find ways

to try to impress this girl. For example, it shows him changing his clothing style and getting a
tattoo. At the end we see the same girl actually ending up with someone different.
A similarity I see right away is that they mostly have the same meaning. Both videos
have people they are interested in who end up not being who they thought they were. A major
difference is the music style. Taylor’s version is a pop song and is very upbeat and catchy. We
Came as Romans’ cover was specifically for the punk and metalcore genre. Their version is very
upbeat and starts off almost exactly the same way Taylor’s does. However, because they are a
metalcore band, there are some sections where the music is heavy and hard.
Taylors audience is made up more of younger women and teens. I don’t think a lot of
people who are into metal music would be particularly interested in a Taylor Swift song. We
Came as Romans fan base is made up of people who enjoy rock, metal, and punk.
Both of these videos appeal to pathos. Swift’s version uses the emotion by showing a
relationship starting off really strong and then coming to an end. Perhaps her intention was for
people to feel bad for her. We Came as Romans uses pathos as well but in a different way. I
think they use more humor to get at your emotions. The video is very goofy and is not as serious
as Swifts.
Taylor Swift and We Came as Romans two versions of the song “I Knew You Were
Trouble” have a few similarities and many differences. They differ on audience, musical genre
and video adaptations but, have the same meaning behind the lyrics.
