Dr. Jose P. Rizal was known because of his work El Filibusterismo, Noli Me
Tangere, and his essay in La solidaridad that was intended to oppose Spanish
colonization and inspire Filipinos to arise and fight back from Spanish cruelty. Dr.
Rizal symbolizes the freedom that our fellow countrymen fought immensely to
attain as to why he has been a national iconic hero for hundreds of ages. He
resonates in the determination and intelligence of Filipinos who fought for
freedom and he was an instrument for Filipinos to build courage and rise against
the unequal treatment of Spain back then. Dr. Rizal has been an honorable man to
the end, his works and good deeds are told and narrated in books and such, he has
been what seems to be a supplementation to education in our country and in some
m
countries where he even was the main study in a work room. However, despite his
er as
commendable features and deeds many are still doubting Dr. Rizal after Manila
co
and Spanish newspapers claimed his renouncement after his execution. In
eH w
accordance to some, Rizal had grown more renowned in acknowledging his errors
o.
against faith, but still to some, it is considered beyond-belief that at the final
rs e
moment of his life he will retract his writing that proved heroism.
ou urc
In my viewpoint, Dr. Rizal did not retract. To this was the copy of the retraction
paper that was allegedly signed by Rizal but was only published in newspapers
o
and was even kept as a secret. Another evidence that supports this stand is the
aC s
proof and statement that says that when Father Balaguer came to accept that he
v i y re
married Jose and Josephine when Jose had already signed the retraction paper.
However, it is to be considered that there were neither a marriage certificate or a
public record shown that could prove Father Balaguer’s statements. Furthermore
ed d
in my research, it was way back when Rizal was still exiled in Dapitan that Father
Sanchez who was Rizal’s favourite teacher from Ateneo was sent by the Jesuits
ar stu
superiors to try to persuade his former student to the allegation towards the
Spanish religious’ and more importantly, the Catholic Religion in the Philippines.
Father Sanchez told him to retract in exchange of a professorship, a hundred
sh is
thousand pesos and an estate (Laubach, 1936) but to it, he disregarded the offer as
Th
for him, his triumph and undertaking was never a negotiable matter. There are
arguments stating that Rizal retracted in pursuance of providing a legal status as
his wife to Josephine Bracken, guaranteeing reforms from the Spanish
Government but most importantly, for the sake of saving his family from further
persecution. I agree that it is likely to be of Dr. Rizal’s mentality, but if we are to
further assess the matter, would Rizal after everything, just ingenuously abandon
all his hard work that he struggled to attain and even got him to the point of
execution? I say, no. Dr. Rizal was coerced to set himself apart from the matter in
furtherance of keeping his family’s safety but even so, that wouldn’t mean that he
retracted as it was never the truth.
