Final Project Proposal

For my final project I have decided that I want to focus on taking photographs of athletic

fields and courts. Specifically, I am interested in taking landscape images of these spaces

outdoors. Although I enjoyed tackling panoramas I have not decided to go exclusively in that

direction for this project. However, if the space fits that style, I may decide to include a few in

my final series.

In terms of point of view, I am planning on taking images from within the field or court

to give a sense of being within the space instead of simply surveying it from afar. I feel as though

this will give the viewer a more intimate feeling and allow them to feel more connected to the

image.

In regard to lighting, I will exclusively be using natural light for this project. Ideally I

would like to shoot in mostly overcast days to help facilitate a more serious mood. However, I do

not intend to lock myself down to this light and if I feel as though an image looks well composed

in warmer light than I will not shy away from shooting then.

I plan to create images that are as sharp as possible in order to capture the intensity that I

am attempting to create with my series. This is also in an effort to bring forward the great

textural elements that are present in so many outside courts, and fields. Hopefully shooting in

mostly overcast conditions will allow me to create this clarity and allow me to capture as much

detail as possible.
I feel as though these images could create different moods for different people viewing

the image. For example, in my case viewing these images would bring a sense of familiarity,

clarity but also competitive intensity. Others may get a more, serious or lonely feeling from

viewing empty courts and fields. Overall, I am trying to convey a peaceful, yet semi-serious and

contemplative mood that makes people think about the space and their connection to it.

I feel attracted to this subject because of personal experience and the relationship I have

to sports. For me, there is almost no feeling like stepping onto an empty court or field. I feel both

peaceful and energized all at once, in kind of calm before the storm type of way. I want to tackle

this project to bring some of this perspective to the viewer while also allowing them to have their

own reaction to viewing the space. I do not plan on glorifying any of the spaces I will

photograph but simply presenting the sub, ject in a way that brings the viewer into the space with

me and allows them to both share my emotions and have their own. Sports and the moments that

surround them can be very nostalgic and personal and if I can invoke some of that in the viewer I

feel as though this series would be a success.

The two photographers whose work I feel is similar in some ways are Marisa Scheinfeld

and William Christenberry. In regard to Scheinfeld I feel as though her use of contrast and the

intimate almost eerie way that her photos come across will translate well to my subject for this

project. Scheinfeld’s work really makes you think and brings across an emotional reaction and as

stated earlier I hope to bring across a similar type of emotional reaction. Christenberry on the

other hand I chose because of his use of strong subject, natural contrast, and clarity. Obviously

instead of photographing storefronts or barns I will instead photos on athletic complexes but I

still feel that his use of centralized subject is applicable to my work for this series.
Top 5 Characteristics:

- Use color Contrast

- Use of lines

- Sharp Images (Larger depth of field)

- Use of natural light, preferably overcast
